Run Smarter, Not Harder: Posture Tips for Injury-Free Running

With running season in full swing, I want to share my video on running posture to help you achieve your best performance.

Running can be simple and enjoyable when you harness your body’s natural spring and the force of gravity. Instead of fighting the run, think about literally falling forward, using your hamstrings to lift your heels up behind you. It’s about efficiency, not effort.

Key Posture Tips for Running Success:

Good posture is essential from toes to nose, both in life and while running. Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Stand tall but stay relaxed: Focus on keeping your body aligned without tension.
  • Ears over shoulders.
  • Shoulders over hips.
  • Hips over knees.
  • Soft knees over feet.

Now, here’s where the magic happens:

  • Fall forward from your ankles: Let gravity do the work for you.
  • Arms bent at 90 degrees: Swing them front to back like pendulums, without crossing the midline.
  • Pull heels up: With a relaxed ankle, lift each heel up behind you, one at a time.
  • And repeat—that’s running!

Aim for 45 steps in 15 seconds for optimal cadence and foot strike. Check out this quick video to see it in action:

Is This Program Right for You?

Let me ask you a few questions:

  • Have you signed up for a race but feel confused about how to train?
  • Have you tried running before, only to end up injured after just a few days?

If you nodded yes to any of these, you’re not alone. Running can be confusing without proper guidance, and without the right structure, you risk not reaching the finish line, getting stuck in frustration, or worse—suffering a chronic injury that sidelines you.

It’s All In The Details

We are in the thick of tri season, and races are happening every weekend.

Are you keeping up with your training?

Have you had setbacks with illness? Are you feeling tired? Has life happened?

This is all a normal part of the journey, it is happening to everyone, but can all be prevented by paying attention to the details in your training plan.

The details:

Nutrition: If you are not fueling to support your training, you will burn out or get sick. Your body will ensure that happens because it cannot trust you to get the nutritional support and rest that it needs to keep going.

You can avoid this if you fuel properly before, during, and after training.

It’s simpler than it seems. Eat to fuel your training with unprocessed, one-ingredient carbohydrates, fats and proteins – examples would be sweet potato, avocado and any animal protein you enjoy.  Time your nutrition before and after with real food and use clean sports nutrition while training.

Now is not the time to try to eat carnivore or fast. Your body needs fuel to perform!

I believe we need good whole-food organic supplements to help with the added stress that triathlon puts on our bodies and lifestyles. By this I mean not synthetic vitamins but vitamins made from organic foods that your body recognizes and can use to support any deficiency’s that you are not getting from your food.

Sleep: it is the best recovery tool. DO NOT neglect your sleep.

If you do, you will pay. It’s not a question of IF, but WHEN your body forces you to recover because you have not gotten enough sleep. 7-9 hours/night is ideal. If you get a 6 or less, make up for it with a nap or longer sleep the next night. Please do not give me the excuse of not having enough time- stop scrolling on social and go to bed earlier!

Strength Training: it is sometimes more important than swimming, biking, or running.

If your body lacks the structural/muscular strength it needs, the repetitive movements of swimming, biking, and running can cause overuse injuries.

On those days when you simply cannot get out the door for your swim, bike, or run, make sure you get 20 minutes of strength training.

Buy your equipment and have a set of dumbbells right next to your desk.

Have a mat set up and a pull-up bar in the doorway.

Do some squats, lunges, rows, and push-ups every day.

You will be amazed at how much your tri performance will improve by not neglecting your strength training!

All of these details are an intergral part of my Triathlon Transformation Training Program. This is how I’ve helped 1000’s of athletes over the past 27 years acheive their triathlon dreams.

Will you be next?

Are you ready to take your triathlon training to the next level? Don’t let setbacks hold you back any longer. It’s time to prioritize your nutrition, sleep, and strength training to unlock your full potential.
Let’s get to know each other better – fill out this form and let’s work together to achieve your goals.

Your journey to success starts now!

Even Coaches Can Benefit from UTC! – Heather’s Rockstar Story

Rockstar Triathlete: Heather Shrouds

Coaches Notes: Heather reached out in January, excited to be able to get such a great discount on Ultimate Tri Camp as a USAT certified USAT Coach, earn her CEUs, AND learn the “behind the scenes ” about how I coach my athletes and the Full Circle Coaching Methodology.

I love being able to support USA Triathlon coaches in the application of their knowledge.

There are many different coaching styles, but with my 27 years of experience coaching thousands of triathletes and hosting over 20 triathlon camps, I believe that including training in more than just swimming, biking, and running is imperative to keeping a triathlete doing the sport they love for a lifetime.

At Camp, Heather saw firsthand how to coach the campers on the importance of technique in the swim, bike and running can prevent injuries from overusing the repetitive motion of a triathlon with the use of video analysis and metabolic field testing. Learning breath work, Kihara stretching, Eldoa spine strength, foot strength, and so much more can impact her triathlon performance and help her coach the athletes she is coaching.

Thanks, Heather, for coming in with an open mind and participating fully at Ultimate Tri Camp. You have so many new tools to implement into your coaching practice! You are a true Rockstar Coach/ and Camper!

Age: 48

Profession: Personal Trainer and Triathlon Coach

Why did you choose Ultimate Tri Camp for help in your triathlon journey?
I was at this triathlon camp to earn my CECs for my USAT Certification and improve my form in my swim and run. I knew something was off, but I was still determining what to expect. This was my first triathlon camp ever!

Please share your BIG goals and how Ultimate Tri Camp supported you:
My big goals are to swim 750m under 15 minutes, bike 20+mph, and run a 20-minute 5k
I started my weight loss journey in the fall of 2009. I have lost 100 lbs so far. I fell in love with Triathlon after my first swim, even though I was terrified of the open water. Triathlon and Duathlon Worlds and I have qualified for and competed in Age Group Nationals.

Tell me about your successes so far:

Swim – being more efficient and converting to breathing every 2 strokes instead of 3
Bike – getting my love back for riding outside.  I had been riding on the trainer a lot because of life schedule.   Riding in Clermont during Ultimate Tri Camp was beautiful, and riding in traffic was challenging, but I overcame my fear with the group’s safety.
Run – seeing my form on video during the video analysis and the corrections we made.

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance at Ultimate Tri Camp?
I learned even more about my gut health. I love the ELDOA, meditation, and yoga. Honestly, it all was excellent.
1) Getting my love back for riding outside
2) Recovery strategies
3) The Magnesium cream and Perfect Aminos are a game changer

What was your favorite part of Ultimate Tri Camp?
The camaraderie and the edge of competing with everyone—all of it, honestly. If I had to pick the ELDOAs, I have never done them before, but they’re a game changer for sure.

Are you coming back next year?
Yes, I plan on it!

Sexy in Spandex, Ultimate Tri Camp Rockstar Triathlete: John Dodds

Sexy in Spandex, Ultimate Tri Camp Rockstar Triathlete: John Dodds

Coach Notes:

John loves the triathlon lifestyle and exemplifies someone committed to the long term. Just as with any athlete in any sport, there is always something to improve upon, and I am so proud of how John has kept triathlon in his life even as he overcame prostate cancer and fear in the open water. We were with him every step of the way. So proud of you, John; let’s keep the momentum going. See you soon at the Ride on Ryan Triathlon!

Age:

60 this year!

Profession:

Director of Information Technology Quality

Why did you choose Ultimate Tri Camp for help in your triathlon journey?

In 2017 I saw a triathlon on TV and thought, I want to do this. A month before my 1st race, I participated in a one-day camp in Savannah with Coach Erinne from Full Circle Coaching, which was eye-opening.

At my race a few weeks later (at the Ride On Ryan Triathlon), an 80-year-old woman beat me silly at the finish line. I then decided Full Circle Coaching would be my coach.

Full Circle made me realize that Triathlon is a sport and a lifestyle.

It’s more than swimming, biking, or running: it’s mind, it’s spirit, it’s grit, it’s heart, and nutrition, it’s what you put in is what you get out.

Full Circle coaching is a full-spectrum, holistic mindfulness program.

And they’ll make you “Sexy in Spandex.”

Please share your BIG goals and how Ultimate Tri Camp supported you:

This year will be my 5th year at camp, and every year brings a new awareness. This year was big in swimming challenge awareness. I always wonder why I could swim 2000 meters in a pool and feel I had a great workout.

But swim 50 yards in a lake only to find myself floating, gasping for air, wondering where the buoy was. I realized this year, I never knew how to sight swim. Every time I lifted my head, my legs sank, and my body stopped like a bobber, then I power swam to get going again.

So, learning to relax in the water was my big takeaway. Camp addresses every conceivable concept and potential challenge.

Tell me about your successes so far:

Where do I start? From childhood to 53, I was an average joe who did not do sports. No run, bike, or swim, more like walk, joy ride, and wade on occasion.

From 54 through today, the last 6yrs??? I’ve raced about 24 triathlons and 18 5K/10K/Bridge runs, and have enjoyed training multi-thousands of miles of running, biking, swimming, and unicycling.

And let’s not forget survived and kicked prostate cancer!

Full Circle and the Ultimate Tri Camp… Bring it on!! I’m ready for their assistance with my next big triathlon goals!

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance at Ultimate Tri Camp?

Swim: Technique and sighting
Bike: Heels down to utilize power; changing gears is my friend, and keep pedaling, limit coasting
Run: Lean forward and move the elbows
Nutrition/Health: If I eat healthy, the right foods, my mind, energy, and focus will always be there for me
Mindset: If I put my mind to it, grit it through, and be open to the experience, I am guaranteed to be smiling at the finish line. Have you ever seen a finisher of a race not smiling??? I bet you have not 😊

Did you achieve any Personal Records or Goals?

Every year with FullCircle and participating in Camp, I have achieved PRs. And every year, my PRs are different but so very satisfying.

Name 2 or 3 things you feel will make the biggest difference in your triathlon performance after participating in Ultimate Tri Camp:

  1. Motivation, Intensity
  2. Commitment, Focus, and knowing my “pain point” in my training
  3. Resetting my desire, goals, and expectations for the rest of the year

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?

It’s multi-focal, I’m never bored, and it’s always active even while just breathing meditation/intention. And it makes me feel fantastic; It makes me look Hot and Sexy. In the end? It makes me happy being me 😊

What was your favorite part of Ultimate Tri Camp?

Hard to say, but I can tell you the worst part is saying goodbye and going home. Because every moment was an experience I cherish, even when I found myself sitting in my own “shit.”

I learned, I absorbed, I connected, and I experienced!

What would you say to someone on the fence about attending Ultimate Tri Camp?

When was there a time when you got 360-degree support and assistance with triathlon training? When have you had a group of people wanting you to personally succeed as much as you do for yourself? When have you taken the opportunity to learn, educate, absorb, avoid pitfalls, and identify success in action? If you haven’t, join us at camp; it will change your life!

Are you coming back next year?

Already registered, so absolutely!

Why did you choose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?

With the very limited time available due to my professional commitments and family responsibilities, I needed the most effective workouts that could be completed within the shortest amount of time. Being new to triathlon, and to swimming in particular, I needed comprehensive instruction delivered quickly in all phases of triathlon. While I had been a consistent runner in the past, assistance was needed with nutrition to become a better athlete overall.

What is/ was your “A” race for this season?

Key West Int’l Triathlon, 2023

What are your BIG goals?

  • Complete a 70.3 within 6 hours in 2024
  • Complete an Int’l Tri within 2 hours, 15 minutes
  • Complete a Sprint Tri within 1 hour

Tell me about your successes so far! What were some of your biggest improvements in performance for each of the following? Swim, Bike, Run, and Nutrition/Health.

After joining FCT, the following results were achieved:

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:

  1. Analyzing each workout after it is finished.
  2. Completing the workout early.
  3. Keeping the correct balance between non-triathlon responsibilities and training.

What excites you the most about being involved in running/triathlon?

Being fit going on 55 with more energy during the rest of the day and night compared to people much younger than me. Thinking my way through a triathlon race – a triathlon is like putting together a puzzle that is never the same no matter how many times you do it. Meeting time goals and/or finishing on the podium.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?

Do it now! What are you waiting for? There is always time in the day, no matter how busy you think you are. I did my first few triathlons on a mountain bike and by swimming a sidestroke/breaststroke.

Rockstar Triathlete Dennis Phipps Hit his Personal Record!

Rockstar Triathlete Dennis Phipps

Coaches Notes:

Coach Dennis is an integral part of the coaching process here at Full Circle Coaching. Without a proper bike fit on a triathlon or road bike everything suffers. Dennis’ Bike fits help the Full Circle Coaching athletes produce more power with lower heart rates and feel true comfort so they can focus on training and racing!

Dennis has been doing triathlons for a while and this year 70.3 North Carolina in October was the goal. It’s great when someone I have been mentoring to understand the coaching process applies all the details to his own training and gets awesome results just by following the darn instructions!

From finally getting the balance aspect of his swim, to mastering high power on the bike with higher rpms, whcih allowed him his fastest 13.1 off the bike.

Thanks for being an important part of Full Circle Coaching over the past 11 years. Your love of cycling and triathlon inspires us all. Thanks for sharing all your bike wisdom Dennis- Love your supplements too!- You are a true Rockstar Triathlete and Coach!

Rockstar Triathlete Brett Logan: Surpassing The Gap to Live in The Gain

Rockstar Triathlete Brett Logan: Surpassing The Gap to Live in The Gain

Coaches Notes:

It took me a while to get Brett to really see how far he has come back in so little time.

I like to help my athletes focus on the gain, not the gap, and that can be hard to do if the gap is where most of us are all the time.

Brett’s gains have been many: Losing weight, getting stronger by overcoming injury, and learning how to actually train for a triathlon with specific parameters like power, rpms, video analysis, and testing- His results speak for themselves. I am super proud of you, Brett, and we are just getting started. You are an inspirational Rockstar Triathlete!

Why did you choose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?

I was getting back into tri after a nearly 10 year hiatus and was looking for a mix of in-person local group training and online coaching. I spoke with most of the local Miami tri clubs and Erinne’s experience and approach stood out. It turned out that my original tri coach was one of her students.

What is/ was your “A” race for this season?

Key West intl distance.

What are your BIG goals?

My biggest goal is to make triathlon a long term and sustainable part of my life, also looking to do my first 70.3 in 2024.

Tell me about your successes so far! What were some of your biggest improvements in performance for each of the following? Swim, Bike, Run, and Nutrition/Health.

With just a few tips and some warm up advice I had a swim PR on my first race back.

I was as surprised as anyone given my fitness level was still very much a work in progress at that point. I have since improved upon that PR twice in the ensuing six months with a deeper dive into form and technique.

I am also far more efficient in the water, not expending as much energy on the swim and entering T1 with a lower heart rate.

My functional threshold power on the bike improved by 29 watts in six months. My one-mile run test improved by 3 minutes and 30 seconds, which was very near a decade-old PR time.

Starting out, I fully believed approaching those old run times would take far longer than six months, but it is happening much more quickly.

Probably the best thing that has happened to me since joining Full Circle is that we solved a problem that has plagued me both within Tri and in everyday life. I didn’t know that sweat rates and salinity rates within that sweat could vary dramatically from person to person. It turns out I have a heavy sweat rate and I am a salty sweater. Two things that often go together. One of the Full Circle coaches picked up on the issue during a workout and consequently we adjusted my electrolyte intake and it has made all the difference.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:

  1. Arriving at the mental mindframe that tri is a lifestyle and making the adjustments to incorporate it on a long term basis.
  2. Finally solving my electrolyte issue.

What excites you the most about being involved in running/triathlon?

Everything from forcing me to be better organized, to stress relief and more focus and stamina for work and family.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?

Do it. There is something for everyone. If you are looking to get back in amazing shape and participate in local races or if you want to compete at the highest level the sport offers there are people doing it here.

You have so many responsibilities and so little time. Even when you stick to a schedule, circumstances can disrupt your plans and leave you scrambling. It’s enough to make you want to give up when everything seems to be working against you.

But don’t – please!

It happens to everyone. After all, there’s only so much we can control – and a whole universe of people, places and things that are simply beyond us. When you learn to EXPECT disruption, and to simply accept it as a fact of life, then you can begin to be free of it, and keep moving forward.

Here’s a super-basic example. If you leave 20 minutes ahead of time for any appointment. That would allow for traffic or another unexpected delay. If you arrived on time, you’d have a few minutes to kill; if the journey took longer than expected, you would still be on time.

I think about this little lesson all the time. It’s even easy to apply it to healthy goals.

For example, if you want to lose weight, then it’s not enough to start eating right. You also have to anticipate days when you won’t be able to, for whatever reason. Maybe you’re stuck in a work conference, or traveling, or just can’t resist your neighbor’s fried chicken today.

If you want to train for a triathlon then you have to accept that you’ll need rest days/ weeks, or adjustments to your training schedule. There might be bad weather. That you might have a family emergency that keeps you from completing your training.

Here’s my wish for you. When these circumstances happen – and they will – don’t abandon your goals.

Instead, remember that success takes consistent effort over time. And use each setback to strengthen the commitment you made to yourself.

It’s all in how you look at it!

Why did you choose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?

Many years ago, more than ten years actually, I was looking to get into triathlon. Somebody recommended Full Circle Coaching, and since the first day I joined the team, I have felt that was the correct place to start my triathlon journey.

What is/ was your “A” race for this season?

My first Full Ironman: COZUMEL 2023
FCC has been with me since my first sprint race, which I was very afraid to do. Erinne pushed me to go for it, so, after my first 6 months training with the group, I decided to register for my first sprint in KW. That was 10 years ago! After that I just kept racing and looking for longer distances. After many sprints, Olympics and 70.3, the moment for the first full Ironman arrived.

What are your BIG goals?

For this year, the big goal was completing my first full IM. But not just that, I wanted to complete it within 13 hours.

Tell me about your successes so far!

I’ve been training with Erinne for more than ten years. I am so grateful to have her and the team in my life. Thanks to her, I have grown as a triathlete in all the ways. It is not only a training program; it includes support in all aspects of life- friendship, guidance, nutrition, physical and mental health, support, inspiration, motivation, and the hand you can count on when things are hard.

With the pandemic, I had a very hard time, and Erinne was always available for me, not only as a coach, but also as a friend, and helped me unconditionally to get out of that dark hole I got into during those pandemic years.

Thanks to the sport, to her and to the group, I was able to get my life back, and that’s something I will never forget and will always be thankful.

Doing my first full Ironman was the challenge I set for myself as a welcome back to my “new life.” Erinne has supported me since the beginning, helping me believe in myself and making me confident enough to go through the process.

It was very hard, but I also enjoyed it so much. It has been one of the most amazing journeys I’ve ever been on.

My success today is being back in life, healthy physically and mentally… being back in a positive way, motivated and thankful for being alive, enjoying every second of life, and being present in every moment.

Thanks Erinne and FCC!

What were some of your biggest improvements in performance for each of the following? Swim, Bike, Run, and Nutrition/Health.

Swim: My catch and glide; going longer in open water swims without anxiety. We completed the Alligator Lighthouse 8-mile open water swim and got 2nd place, and it was Erinne’s PR for a 2-person relay team.

Bike: Learning and understanding the “power” world finally made me stronger and faster. Learned how to pace myself successfully, and use watts not speed to guide my training.

Run: I learned how to train and fuel correctly to run for longer distances, complete my first marathon, and pace perfectly with negative splits.

Nutrition: Learned EVERYTHING about nutrition: Supplements; How to make my body strong and efficient 100%. Without the new nutrition approach, I wouldn’t have been able to reach my goals.

TOTAL GAME CHANGER!!!

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:

  1. Having Erinne as my coach and guide.
  2. Getting the motivation and support from the FCC group 24/7.
  3. Meeting amazing people in the community who are so inspirational and motivational. Having friends in my life, I know I can count on unconditionally.

What excites you the most about being involved in running/triathlon?

Triathlon is where you can challenge and motivate yourself in many ways. NO LIMITS.
Triathlon helps you to keep growing as a person every day, have the discipline to keep pushing, and it feeds your mind and soul.
Accomplishing big, scary goals makes you realize how amazing your body is, how far you can go, and how thankful you should be for life. ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?

Just try it…you won’t regret!
