Slow Down to Get Faster & Burn Fat

Slow Down to Get Faster & Burn Fat

So many athletes spend way too much time going fast and hard. Many coaches call this the “Black Hole” of training. Just google it and read the many articles describing the moderately hard effort that makes you feel like you did something but keeps you stuck in the middle.

Training hard and fast has its place, but if you don’t have any fitness at all you will likely get injured and if you have some fitness and always train fast and hard, you are likely training in this so called black hole of fitness.

Yes, you can get a certain amount of fitness here at 75-85% effort, on the journey to get in shape and I do recommend a training blocks here.

But you actually will be able to get faster and have higher performance potential if you train the two ends of the training spectrum: very slow, aerobic and very short and fast.

Today’s Ill be talking about what the long and slow benefits are, because you really can’t do the short and very fast training without a good base of long and slow.

What this looks like in terms of training is keeping your heart rate, power and effort level low for a minimum of 1 swim, 1 bike and 1 run session each week.

If you are just getting into shape, all your training should be here for about 4-8 weeks. At this low intensity you can really work on form and skills to become better swimmers, better bikers and better runners which is a win win.

Low heart rate does not have to mean boring.

How low is low? You can perform a Metabolic Efficiency Test with my colleague Connie Sol to find out your Aerobic Threshold. Or, you can take 180 – your age to calculate your Aerobic Threshold heart rate. (180 – 50 = 130, so aim to keep heart rate average around 130 for your long slow swims, bikes and runs). When you know what heart rate you switch over from burning fat to carbohydrate you want to aim to train in in this range for your low heart rate training.

As humans, we are always burning a ratio of carbohydrate, fat and protein. At rest ,you burn a higher percentage of fat. At very high intensities you switch to a higher percentage of carbs.

An added benefit of the slow aerobic training is you stay burning fat for longer periods of time and eventually at higher intensities. There is a nutritional component to this as well. But that will have to be for another blog.

Why would we want to do that as endurance athletes?
1 gram of fat gives you 9 calories of energy and 1 gram of carbohydrate gives your 4 calories.

If you can train your body to burn fat for longer and eventually higher intensities it’s a great thing. You get leaner, you need less fuel to train and race, so there is less chance of gastric distress by eating all those gels.

Every person has between 40,000 to 80,000 calories of fat stored in the body and at maximum we have about 2000- 2500 calories of carbohydrates stored in the body. So as a fuel source we want to teach our bodies to become more efficient at burning fat. However, most people eat so much carbohydrate, that is the fuel source your body chooses first.
So especially as endurance athletes being able to tap into fat for training and racing is only a good thing.

Happy Slow Training!

Rockstar Triathlete Rob Phelps

Rockstar Triathlete Rob Phelps

Coach’s Notes:
Rob and I train online only. He lives in Iowa, and was inside for the first 4 months of our training program together. He went from a solid middle of the packer to 2 podiums in just a few months. I am super proud of all of his accomplishments.

The best is yet to come as we start to transition to half ironman distance getting ready for MiamiMan 2019.

I am able to evaluate his bike fit, swim and run form all from the videos he sends me, and we then evaluate together online so he understands what I’m looking for in his form correction. Explaining the field tests we perform and subsequent drills and intervals in training peaks that I prescribe is how we keep progressing and improving.

Way to go Rob- Can’t wait to see you at MiamiMan on the podium too!  – Coach Erinne Guthrie

Age: 62

Profession:  Attorney – Court Executive

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?  I saw Erinne give a tips during motivation chat at Miami Man 2018 and thought, after three years of no gains, maybe it was time to get a real coach.

What is your “A” race for this season? Miami Man 2019

Please share your BIG goals: I would like to transition from Sprint to Olympic and Half Ironman triathlons, and continue competing for years until there is no one else in my age group!

Tell me about your successes so far:  Three years of coaching myself and watching endless videos had me stuck in the middle of my age group at 1:45 time for a Sprint Triathlon.  After six months with Erinne, I have two podiums this year (2nd, then a 1st) and my most recent race was Personal Record was a 1:25 and not walking anymore on the run.

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for each of the following?
Swim: Swimming has incrementally improved with the drills from Full Circle Coaching
Bike: The bike intervals have improved my VO2 max.
Run: This is probably my greatest gain, as I had injury issues and frankly, hated running.  I have gone from a 40 minute 5K to a 28 minute 5K., off the bike
Nutrition/Health:   Sadly, my wife and Erinne agree on nutrition so the biggest improvement is what I am no longer eating at lunchtime (fast food).

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:
1.The training plan Erinne provides and the knowledge provided on why and how to execute it.
2.  Knowing I will be in trouble if I do not execute the training as prescribed, or if I eat fast food.  Honestly, I am not a good liar, Erinne will find out.
3. Following all the Miami folks and their (mis)adventures on WhatsApp.  I am cheering them on from Iowa, and it was great when they respond through the app on my success this summer.  Someday I will retire and get to a morning training session in Miami!

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?  The friendliness of all the competitors.  The encouragement along the bike and run routes is genuine.  Some of the most fun is the conversation with all the other old guys as we wait our turn to start the swim.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?  Jump IN!  Best decision I ever made.   The physical and motivational advantages being part of this group (even from Iowa) are real.  I have gone from liking triathlon to loving it.

It’s Your Life

It’s Your Life

One of the biggest reasons I see people fall off the health and fitness or, triathlon wagon is also the saddest.

It’s lack of support.

Be it a spouse, family members, or friends, one of the fastest ways people are pulled off track from reaching their goals is when they aren’t fully supported by those they love.

This happens for different reasons…

The person could fear what it means for the relationship if YOU change.

They could think you won’t be fun anymore.

They simply don’t understand; the way it makes you feel, the fun and the actual joy it can bring.

Worst case, they want to keep or assert control.

It can start with comments about why you’re not eating something at a social gathering, to giving you a hard time over your dedication to the sport and why you get up early and start skipping happy hour.

Whatever the case is, this is one of the easiest ways to quit on yourself.

But here’s the thing. You get ONE LIFE.

YOU are your top priority always. Why not live it your healthiest, most confident, most vibrant, and with the most impact?

You can even be the catalyst for change in your circle. Invite friends or family to join you.

But please… never, EVER let anyone talk you out of your journey and dedication to health, wellness and even triathlon.

Have you ever experienced this or know someone who has?

Either way, we’re here to support the best version of YOU. To help you balance triathlon in your life in a good way!

Comment below to let me know if you want my help.

Rockstar Triathlete Terri Camejo

Rockstar Triathlete Terri Camejo

Coaches Notes: Terri came to me as a person who wanted to compete only in Duathlon. She said she would never be a swimmer; that lasted about 3 months. She has done so much work in the water, coming from bubbles and floating to now getting out in the front of the pack, I could not be more proud!

Her cycling was always a strength and now with a power meter she continues to get strong. Continuing to strengthen her feet and ankles to handle the run has allowed her endurance to get better. I am super excited for her to go long after a few years of getting faster and stronger.

Can’t wait to see you cross the IM finish line Terri, you got this!

Age:  51

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?   The coaches are excellent, always encouraging and supportive of my triathlon goals. I joined FCC at the beginning of 2017 and have come a long way from not knowing how to swim to competing in multiple triathlons.

What is your “A” race for this season?  My “A” race this year is Augusta 70.3 with the intent of completing the race in 6 hours more or less.

Please share your BIG goals:  My Big goal is to complete a Full Ironman next year.

Tell me about your successes so far:  Gaining more and more confidence in the swim portion of my races has been by far my greatest accomplishment. With Erinne’s support, I have learned to overcome my fear of the water as I swim and now, I am able to relax and not be so anxious before or during the swim portion.

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for the each of the following? Swim: Bike: Run: Nutrition/Health: Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved:

Learning how to swim in the open water around a crowd of swimmers with waves and currents has been by far my greatest improvement. It is not enough to be prepared mentally, it takes hours of practice and patience to learn how to swim and be prepared for unexpected conditions.

FCC has helped me tremendously, for I was one of the last ones out of the water for my age group for a long time and just recently I set a personal record. In TriMiami, I was 3rd in the swim for my age group (first time ever) and in Trilogy 1; I was 2nd in the swim. Cycling has always been my favorite but even in this area I have learned how to pace myself better. As for the run, this area continues to be one that needs attention since I suffer from Tendonitis and at times it hurts during the run portion. Even in this area I continue to learn from FCC coaches.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:

1. Learning how to listen to my body and pushing when I know I can do more as well as taking it easier when I am tired.  This is key to preventing injury.

2. Learning how to make better choices with my nutrition before, during and after a workout.

3. The support and encouragement of family and FCC teammates are the greatest impact in helping me continue to exercise and participate in this amazing sport.

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?

The energy and exciment you get from teammates and coaches is wonderful. Also, to see so many people all ages and sizes participating in triathlons.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?

I am always encouraging people to start an active lifestyle by joining a training program that helps you stay motivated and helps you with your individual goals.

The Thing that Drives You

The Thing that Drives You

There are so many reasons that people desire to get in shape, lose weight, get stronger, sign up for a triathlon.

But the reason lies underneath the surface.

It’s not really about the number on a scale, how much the barbell in your hands weighs, crossing the finish line or anything really to do with being fit at all.

It’s our desire to FEEL a certain way. It’s the confidence we seek.

It’s the pride.

But it’s also often something outside of ourselves that is our biggest driver.

Our kids. Our grand kids. Getting out of chronic pain. Living longer. Getting off medications.

So, I’m curious, what’s the top reason you can think of that drives you to become your healthiest self?

Would love it if you’d comment and share with me.

Wishing you well,

Find Peace in the Struggle

Find Peace in the Struggle

Life is a combination of every emotion under the sun.

We live for the moments of happiness, joy, excitement, and all of the wonderful things that energize us, inspire us, and make us feel complete.

But what about the tough stuff?

Broken relationships, body disappointment, poor health and disease, financial struggles…

I believe that some of the most powerful growth experiences of our lives will always come from our struggles.

We won’t necessarily appreciate that struggle in the moment. In fact, we might hate it and question why something so awful is happening to us.

But there’s a lesson and opportunity for growth under it all.

When you feel these intense struggles throughout your life remember…

…Thousands or even millions of other people have also experienced this struggle and you are not alone.

…Life is cyclical and better times are coming.

…You can become curious about the circumstance rather than fill yourself full of fear and worry. Seek meaning and lessons. Ask what is the lesson in this experience for me.

…And simply know that you are up-leveling as a person in some way.

You will be stronger, better prepared, and a more solid individual from this experience.

I know that it’s hard to see opportunities in struggle, but I promise, if you can shift your perspective, not only will the struggle be easier to manage, but the experience also won’t be nearly as painful.

The only thing we can really control in life is how we react to things. Manage this well and so much changes.

I’d love for you to reply and share your thoughts with me.

Wishing you well,
Coach Erinne Guthrie

Rockstar Triathlete Richard Gomez

Rockstar Triathlete Richard Gomez

Coaches Notes: Richard has made some amazing improvements in just 4 months, its unbelievable!  Faster times in swim, bike and run and no more meds for reflux. As a CHEK Holistic Lifestyle Coach, this is ultimately the biggest and most improvement I like to see, because without good health you won’t achieve faster times and improved performances.  Way to go Richard, thank you so much for trusting the process and following the plan to the “T.”  When you do that, these are the results that are possible being part of the Gold Group!  Can’t wait to see what happens when we go VIP soon for your Ironman Journey!

Age: 43

Profession: Construction Manager

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?
I had been doing triathlon’s and training on my own for a year and a half. After completing my first Half Ironman (Augusta) in 2018 I realized that if I really wanted to complete a Full Ironman I needed some help; specifically on the nutrition side. I did not feel well after my race; I was eating whatever I wanted and I really was just plateauing on my training. I had met Erinne through my sister in law a year ago during a Mack Cycle race. After my Half Ironman, and deciding I was going to try for the Full, I decided to give her a call and see what her group was all about. After a couple of meetings and attending a few of her classes I was sold.

What is your “A” race for this season?
Lake Placid Ironman 2020

Please share your BIG goals:
Getting my nutrition and reflux to a point that it does not affect my racing. Get my weight down to 150 lbs. and maintaining. 6 Hour Half Iron; Full Iron under 14 Hours.

Tell me about your successes so far:
Before starting Erinne’s gut healing Nutrition I was taking prescription Omeprazole daily for my reflux and could not take any nutrition while running as it would cause my reflux to flare up. Since starting her program the end of January I have not taken one pill for my heartburn and am able to finally take in nutrition while I run. Plus I am weighing 151 lbs. and have been maintaining. (lost 25 lbs)

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for the each of the following? Swim: Bike: Run: Nutrition/Health: Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved:
My swim pace and form has been drastically improved. I have PR’d every swim since I started training with Erinne. Biking was my strong suit before training with Erinne; however she did point out my bike fitting was not ideal. After getting this adjusted, my comfort level on the bike has been drastically improved, making my run transitions seamless. Aside from my nutrition, running has been my biggest improvement since joining Full Circle. When I started with Erinne my goal was to be at a sub 10 minute mile in a sprint triathlon. My last race I averaged 8:49 per mile. Almost two minutes better than my goal only after four months of training; and that is even with the fact that I had tendonitis that kept me from running for three weeks. Nutrition, I can’t say enough. Not more reflux or heartburn; I have lost 25 pounds; my diet is better than it has ever been, yet I am never hungry or craving junk food; I have cut back on my booze intake; and most importantly I am able to eat while training.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:

1. Nutrition and understanding how what I eat affects my training.

2. The tribe/group structure really does help push and motivate me on the days I don’t want to get up

3. Having someone to critique/observe your form really helps identify little form issues that you will never catch when training on your own.

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?
The sense of personal accomplishment and enduring the mental strain associated with endurance racing

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?
First, getting with Erinne to understand your nutrition is life changing. Never really understood how important this was not only for the physical, but for my overall balance of Mind, Body and Soul. Second, as I stated above, the importance of having someone with Erinne and her teams expertise and knowledge to observe you and make subtle adjustments to your form, technique and training is immeasurable.
