Let nature support your health

Let nature support your health

We are all part of nature, products of the world just like the flowers and the birds and the oceans.

It’s easy to forget that sometimes, but it’s true.

And summertime can help us lock back into that innate power and energy as an endless resource for healthy living. Science verifies that merely being outside more lets nature improve our bodies, minds and spirits.

So, get out there and know that you’re doing something smart for yourself every time you step outside. Soak up the sun and fresh air and let it work its wonders on you.

  • Being exposed to nature helps us feel better emotionally.
  • It lowers blood pressure and eases muscle tension.
  • It connects us to other people, to the world, and even to the universe.
  • This is true whether you hike in the mountains or stroll in your local park, swim in the ocean, bike on the road or run on the beach.
  • Trees reduce noise and improve air quality. Imagine all they do for humans!
  • Our bodies need sunshine and Vitamin D, so get your boost walking, jogging, or biking outside today.
  • Put your hands in the earth, prune your bushes, and plant new flowers. The symbolic implications are rich!

If you’re like the rest of the world, you’ve been spending too much time inside these last two years, looking at screens and sitting.

This summer, let nature works its magic on you. You deserve it.

Invest in YOU

Invest in YOU

We can all say we’d like to make certain changes in our lives. But change is hard sometimes.

It’s one thing to say you want transformation, but another to actually make it happen.

Really bringing about change requires investments that most people are simply unwilling to make.

It takes time, money and energy to transform any area of your life. Simply put, it doesn’t come easy.

But here’s the way to look at it:

As an investment.

Yep, every time you take a right action to reach a goal, you’re investing in yourself.

You’re increasing the chances you’ll succeed.

You’re paying your future self with sacrifice and dedication that will pay off in time.

For example, You might not want to eat healthy or exercise every day.

But you know that each healthy meal and each workout is improving your quality of life, today and in the future. And it will all pay off one day in the same way – whether with a short-term goal like losing weight for summer, signing up for your first triathlon, or the long-term goal of staying healthy as you age.

Besides, “instant gratification” is so overrated. Invest in yourself! Success will be so much richer because you did.

Don’t Get Fit for Summer

Don’t Get Fit for Summer

Summer is such a powerful time. It’s packed full of emotions and memories that can affect our mindset and mood.

We all have nostalgia around summer with the sights and smells and that feeling of being free.

You know that healthy habits key to living your best lives in the sun, to enjoying friends, family and travel – and, yes, to looking your best.

But remember that your core, long-term commitment is more important in the long run than any seasonal stimulation or motivation. It comes from within, from knowing your “why” – and it’s truly the most powerful thing.

Which is why I want to say – don’t get fit for summer. Commit to fit for life.

So, take a moment now to look within yourself and recall your main motivation for leading a healthy lifestyle.

  • Maybe you want to get leaner so you look, feel and move better.
  • Maybe you want to improve athletic performance – or your ability to keep up with the kids.
  • Maybe your commitment to healthy living has taken root in your identity, and you want to keep nurturing it all year long.
  • Maybe you are ready to sign up for a triathlon or Ironman

It doesn’t matter what it is – no judgment here.

Take a moment to pause and be grateful for how far you’ve come so far this year.

You’ve earned a moment in the sun, for sure. Keep the power of your “why” close by for now and for when the days get shorter this fall.

You got this!

Visualize your ideal self

Photo by Kateryna Hliznitsova on Unsplash

Visualize Your Ideal Self

I want you to visualize your ideal self.

The point of this exercise is all about manifestation – about bringing your ideal self into your physical reality. Which you can only do once you’re crystal clear on who you are.

Really think about it, focusing on various aspects of who you are and who you want to be, and then sit down with pen and paper.

Here are some questions to get your juices flowing. Remember to think positively about yourself in this.

Envision a specific point in the future. Imagine as fully as you can what things look like, taste like, smell like, etc. Use all your senses.

Go somewhere quiet where you’ll have some nice, quiet “alone time” to journal it out.

Don’t rush.

And remember, we’re talking IDEAL, here. So no pooh-poohing yourself!

OK. Let’s go.

  1. First, who are you? Make a quick inventory of identifiers. Like, “Woman. American. Wife. Husband, Daughter, Triathlete.” Etc.
  2. Now add similar labels to which you aspire. Something like, “Mom. Runner. Chef, Ironman”
  3. What do you do well? What do you enjoy? How can you develop those skills more?
  4. Next, how does your ideal self think? What does she or he believe? Try something like, “I make decisions calmly and rationally, but I never forget the importance of heart and emotion. I feel centered and generous. I believe life is good and I am blessed.”
  5. How do you feel and look? “I feel positive about the future and grateful for what I have,” perhaps… Or, “I look my best, due to healthy habits of eating right, exercising and managing stress.”
  6. Where are you geographically? Do you live in Paris, or a remote cabin in the woods, by the beach or hometown.
  7. Are you creative? Retired? Wealthy?
  8. Are you in love? Happily single?
  9. Did you achieve goals in your personal life, social life, and professional life? What were they? How do you imagine looking back on them?

Then practice daily visualization as a part of your routine: Sit down, close your eyes, and imagine your ideal self as thoroughly as you can.

It’s not only psychologically empowering, but it helps rewire your brain to manifest these emotions and desires. It’s good for anxiety and self-esteem, and for planning and goal-setting.

Athletes have known for generations that if they can visualize themselves winning, it prepares their mindset for victory.

I have all my athletes imagine their perfect race days and I myself am visualizing daily my successful RAAM (Ride Across America). I also do this daily for my personal and business life.

CEOs do it with business challenges.

Actors do it with playing roles.

You can do the same. And I am here to help.

Are you going to do this exercise with me? Let me know!

Mental skills are a huge part of my Triathlon Transformation Program.

I have 5 spots open to finish out the year just as you are imagining!

In case no one has told you today…

In case no one has told you today…

You are so amazing and powerful.

Do you realize that?

It’s true.

You can do anything you set your mind to. I mean YOU, the person reading this right now – not just the general, royal “you.” I sincerely believe this:

  • You can create the life you want.
  • You can be healthy, loved and hopeful.
  • You deserve every success.

And you can get it.

It will take planning, dedication, and sacrifice – but if you want it bad enough, then everything you desire is readily available to you.

You might have to shift how you think and talk about yourself.

You might have to build new habits and priorities.

You will definitely have to put in the effort sometimes when you just don’t want to – but, let’s face it, you’ve already tried the easier path, and IT DID NOT WORK.

Success will also take believing in yourself as much as you believe in anything, and I know how hard that is for some people. We’ve been conditioned to doubt ourselves, or to be ashamed of our ambition.

At least, I know I was. I finally overcame those self-limiting beliefs by working on it daily. And you can too, by talking to a friend or coach, writing in your journal, or praying.

Literally: Say what you want and say you deserve it. It will help you come to believe that you do.

That’s the first step.

Because once you believe in yourself and use the power of words to send your thoughts into the universe… well, my friend, then you’re forever able to touch that cornerstone of strength when difficulties and doubts emerge.

And you can always count on this: I will believe in you even if you start to doubt yourself again.

You are so amazing and powerful.

IT’S TRUE.

The importance of daily rituals

The importance of daily rituals

You’ve probably heard someone complain about being in a rut.

Successful people swear by the power of daily rituals and routines to help them stay in flow. They use them to build the groundwork of their lives and to continue growing.

Here’s a famous quote from Aristotle on the topic:

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

Routines help you manage your time.

They prepare you for the unexpected.

They help you preserve energy, strength and worry for more important things.

Just imagine what a wreck you’d be without any daily rituals.

Think about the habit of brushing your teeth each morning. It was ingrained in you as a child, so you don’t even think about it. And as a reward, you have dental health and social acceptance that would’ve been denied otherwise, right?

I have a morning and evening routine that enhances my mindset, energy and allows me to give from a place of over flow.

Where do you think you need some new habits now?

Here are some examples that lots of people find helpful just to get you thinking:

  • Start the day with prayer, gratitude, meditation or light movement.
  • Avoid email first thing in the morning to keep your perspective on stressors.
  • Drink 24 ounces of spring or filtered water with a pinch of seasalt
  • Eat a healthy breakfast every day.
  • Make a daily to-do list that includes exercise or at least some form of intentional movement.
  • Go to bed and wake up at the same times every night and day.
  • Play music or use essential oils to enliven your atmosphere for activity or rest.

Habits that support a healthy lifestyle are particularly important.

If you want to stay at a healthy weight, for example, then you need to take daily action to eat right and exercise.

Would it help to build purposeful action around these ideas into your routine? To meal-prep on Sunday afternoons after your grocery shopping, for example? Or to go to the gym every Monday, Wednesday and Friday on your way home from work? Put it all in your calendar.

Studies show that connecting a new habit to an existing one increases your chances of success.

Habits are self-care in action.

What saying “I’m too busy” really means

What saying “I’m too busy” really means

Can we get real for a minute?

It’s about how “busy” you say you are.

  • “I’m too BUSY to make healthy meals.”
  • “I’m too BUSY to exercise regularly.”
  • “I’m too BUSY to manage my stress.”
  • I’m too BUSY to train for that triathlon I’ve always dreamed of

If you’re using that old excuse to avoid making positive changes for yourself, then I have some tough love for you:

It’s just not true. You are NOT too busy.

Seriously, as hectic as your daily life can be, I implore you to remember this:

Many people are way busier, and they still manage to eat right, exercise, and generally take care of themselves better than you’re doing right now.

Single parents working two jobs and going to night school, for instance – plenty of them make the time to live a healthy life, while also going to work, raising the kids, studying, and tending to countless other demands, just like you.

It all comes down to individual choices. You can decide to stop feeling exhausted by the victim mentality – to joyfully take control again with a fresh outlook.

CHOOSE to prep a few dinners you can have waiting in the freezer so you’ll be more likely to drive past the drive-through.

CHOOSE to enjoy a workout instead of mindlessly channel surfing.

CHOOSE to express gratitude for the bounty of your life, to manage your priorities — and even to learn to say “no” sometimes!

We all get the same amount of time in a day. It’s up to you how to spend it.

How to Eliminate Excuses

How to Eliminate Excuses

When we were kids, we could find excuses for anything, right?

For not going to bed on time.

For fighting with siblings.

For not getting homework done.

As adults, we’ve learned to take responsibility for our actions and failures – at least most of the time. But there’s always a supply of excuses waiting within reach whenever we want to use one, including about our health and fitness.

Your spouse, your kids, the traffic.

Your boss.

Your biorhythms.

On and on…

So how do we get rid of this childhood habit once and for all?

Here are some of my best ideas.

1.     Realize you’re only hurting yourself when you find a scapegoat. It doesn’t hurt the coach, your significant other, your doctor … anyone else.

2.     Let go of the persecution complex. Traffic doesn’t happen to just you. Everyone’s boss throws a wrench in their plans sometimes. Nobody “feels like it” all the time, even those who seem divinely motivated to make it look easy.

3.     Stop comparing yourself to others. It only sets you up to feel “less than” and not good enough, which undermines your motivation and negative self-talk.

4.     Seek inspiration from others who keep getting up every time they fall. This can be someone at work, a friend at the gym, or even a figure in fiction.

5.     Acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses alike. Let’s say you’re good at getting to the gym on time, but you don’t work as hard as you want. OK – great! How can you build on that? Work out with a friend or trainer, take a group class, or meditate for a few moments before you walk in? What you don’t want to do: Tell yourself it’s someone else’s fault that you’re not quite hitting it.

6.     Scratch the surface. What’s underneath the need to make an excuse? Are you afraid of something? Feeling insecure or intimidated? Whatever it is, a little introspection can help identify the source, and from there, you’re closer to eliminating it.

7.     Repeat success. When something works for you, repeat it. Think about why – and how you can apply the lesson elsewhere.

I’d love for you to hit reply and let me know which tip is most helpful!

You are the secret to your own success!

You are the secret to your own success!

I had a 1-on-1 run evaluation this week with a person who is struggling with their running after being TOLD they have this, they have that, they should never run, etc, etc, etc…

We got through the session identifying some core reasons why they are in pain and how to proceed in a safe manner to achieve the goal of getting back to running.

She thanked me (which I greatly appreciate) by saying that I may be the secret to her success.

I reminded her that SHE is the secret to her own success.

NO ONE ELSE CAN BE THAT FOR YOU!

It’s now time for her to do the stretching and strengthening and start the journey to her own recovery.

If she does or doesn’t it’s up to her, but we (the FC team) are here to support her journey!

ANYTHING is possible if you choose to believe that it is. If you are seeking out a solution you will find it. If it doesn’t feel right or make sense look for another solution that you vibe with, but there is a solution to every single problem.

Most people go to the doctor and take their advice as a last rite and it simply isn’t.

I read about a man who healed himself from being a paraplegic after 5 years in a pool visualizing the connections regrowing in his body to get his limbs to move again!

That’s called never giving up and being determined to find a solution that worked for him!

I don’t even want you to take my advice as anything more than something you should try to see if it works for you (P.S. It does!;))

You are the one that has to decide what works and doesn’t work for you, not me, not the doctor, not Joe down the street.

Your experience is different from every other person on the planet, BUT others have had what you have and healed from it, you are not a special snow flake!

You can learn from others by finding someone that has done what you want to do and see if it works for you!

Nutrition and lifestyle can be a HUGE factor in your success.

That is why I include this training in my coaching program for triathlon.

How To Fall In Love With Healthy Living

How To Fall In Love With Healthy Living

Ah, springtime and thoughts turn to falling in love…

∙      The fresh sense of discovery when you’re excited by the newness of it all.

∙      The rush of endorphins.

∙      That sense of belonging that you just know will last forever.

And here’s the kicker: I’m not talking about falling in love with another person!

I’m talking about falling in love with being healthy.

∙      With taking daily actions to improve your body and mind.

∙      With feeling good every time you exercise, eat right, and get a good night’s sleep.

∙      With knowing that you’ve found a path and other people you will enjoy for a long time.

Seriously! It’s true. You can fall in love with healthy living just like you might talk about “falling in love” with a job, a hobby, and – yes – even a special someone.

First of all, open your mind and your heart to the possibilities. Forget about negative experiences in the past.

Second, when you find something that you enjoy doing, keep doing it! Don’t focus on what you “should be” doing instead. When you find the right one, trust your heart.

Third, nurture this affection with honest self-appraisal and solid reliability. That means you support yourself with loving tenderness and commitment to what you’re doing.

Fourth, accept there will be struggles. And believe it’ll all be worth it.

Fifth, smile! Be proud of what you’re doing and how great you feel and look.

You got this!
