Rockstar Triathlete: John Hourihan – It Wasn’t a Good Fit

Coach’s Notes:

John, Your results speak for themselves.  So very proud of your commitment to the process and trusting me with your return to triathlon and you did amazing. With only one, little setback while doing speed work a little faster than planned, you recovered well and never looked back.  Picking one of the hardest 70.3’s there is as a comeback race is no joke.  I can’t wait to help you on that PR for next year 2019!  No more sitting on the couch;  Way to go Rockstar John Hourihan!

Age: 63

Profession: Founder & Managing Partner of Private Equity firm.

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?  Was looking for a local coach and trainer or group in Miami to help me get off the couch in June and back to a fitness regimen. I had heard about Full Circle Coaching and thought it would a good fit. It wasn’t… “It was a PERFECT fit!”

What is your “A” race for this season?  My A race was St. Croix International 70.3 Triathlon on December 2nd, 2018

Please share your BIG goals:  When I started with FC in June I as 204 lbs, longest run was 4 miles . I had not been on my bike of over a year and swimming was just leisurely laps. Also, 2018 marked the 10 year anniversary of having a bone marrow transplant for recurrent lymphoma.

In 1988, 30 years ago I participated in the 1st St. Croix Triathlon. As a resident of the USVI I wanted to support this iconic race as both a competitor and sponsor.

My goals were: 1) get healthy, 2) commit to a six month training/nutrition plan and 3) finish the race within the time limit and still standing/breathing and 4) be a sponsor to “rebuild” our St. Croix race on its 30th anniversary and importantly after 2 Cat 5 hurricanes hit the Virgin Islands in 2017 with proceeds to benefit local charities.

Tell me about your successes so far:

Mission accomplished! On December 2nd I weighed in at 182 ( 22 lb loss on my 6’2” frame) , finished 2nd place in my age group (7:01:49) and importantly my sponsorship contributed in providing $30,000 to local charities.

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for the each of the following? Swim: Bike: Run: Nutrition/Health: Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved:

Swim: While I had a swimming background in college 41 years ago, the structured pool workouts with other FC tribe members helped push me. Also, Erinne’s focus on technique and flexibility helped a lot.

Bike: Improved strength and really tuned into RPE and corresponding cadence which all translated into more power.

Run: My weakest discipline but with weight loss and better technique, I had  huge endurance gains made so 12 mile training runs were not frightening anymore.

Nutrition: Huge improvement as evidenced by weight loss and performance at the St. Croix race. I’m now a big believer in Perfect Aminos, lo-carb and “greening” each meal.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:
1. Commitment to the plan and process.

2. The support of Coaches Erinne, Dennis , Dani and all the new friends I have met through training with FC…”the tribe”!

3. Of course, support from my wife, Olga !!!

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?  A wonderful community of dedicated athletes .

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?  Just do it…it works!

Rockstar Triathlete; Javier Torres A Personal Record at every Distance in 2018

Rockstar Triathlete; Javier Torres, A personal record at every distance in 2018

Coach’s Notes: Javier is a serious Rockstar Triathlete to have PR’s in every distance race from sprint to Ironman in 2018.  Possibly my shyest quietest athlete, he proved there is a lion under all that calm demeanor.  When he sets his mind to it he gets it done despite a busy travel schedule and being a great dad and husband.  If he had a niggling possible injury he let me know right away and then did what it took to stay on track.  This dedication is what it takes to get it right.  I couldn’t be more proud of you Javier, and it only took me a month of begging to get him to talk about himself.  Thanks for doing this, it just might motivate someone else to believe they can do it too!

Age: 35

Profession:  Software Engineer

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey? I was transitioning from another training team and my prior coach suggested I reach out to Full Circle.  Erinne was recommended for her depth of experience, knowledge and long history in triathlon training.

What is your “A” race for this season? Ironman Florida, 2018

Please share your BIG goals:  This year I want to finish an Ironman distance race, not with a specific time goal but to just finish it without feeling completely depleted.  A secondary goal was to finish a 70.3 race under 6 hours.  Going forward, my medium term goal is to improve my 70.3 time (targeting under 5:30) and improve my marathon times (hopefully somewhere in the 3:50 range); longer term goal is to qualify for Nationals’/Worlds.

Tell me about your successes so far:  I attempted my first sprint triathlon back in 2013 (Escape to Miami, in which I was not able to even finish the swim), to this year finishing my first Ironman distance event.  I think one of the more subtle successes over that time has been in the confidence going into races.  Where before, my mindset was just “get through” the swim and “do what I can” on the bike, now I feel more confidence going into races.  In retrospect, the other success over this past year has been in the ability to recover after races. Before joining Full Circle, it felt as though it would take 5 – 7 days to start feeling normal after a race. Now I feel ready to train a day or two after an event.

What were some of your biggest improvements in performance for the each of the following?  Swim, Bike, Run, Nutrition/Health:  Please include any personal records and goals achieved.  The largest improvement for me has been in the swimming and biking.  Not just in time/speed but also an improvement in form.  On the sprint distance, I have dropped between 8 – 10 minutes, finishing in under an hour for the first time this year. On the 70.3 distance, I have managed to drop approximately 45 minutes since joining with Full Circle.  I believe one of the biggest factors in those improvements has been understanding pacing.  Through coaching and training, I have a better sense of what I am capable of in each discipline and how to put those together along with nutrition to have a solid race.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:
1. The Full Circle team –  From team mates that push you during training, to team mates that come to races to cheer for you and others, the full circle team provides both a sense of comfort and desire to perform better.

2. Consistent training. Having a detailed training plan to follow that is tailored to my goals, as well as the ability to ask the coaches questions about the workouts and for advice on any slight tweaks.

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?  The personal challenge of the sport as well as the variety in challenge from course to course and day to day. You can do a long distance event and experience a different challenge from doing a short course event.  Or, the challenge of completing a hard swim, a hilly bike, etc.  I’m personally still at the point where there is excitement in seeing if I can go faster over the last race, track day, etc.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?  I believe there is always room for improvement and having coaches that are objective, highly skilled and highly experienced are what’s going to drive those improvements. @Erinneguthrie  and the coaches at Full Circle @danielamontiel will provide the training plans and guidance to meet your goals, but also go the extra mile to get you there (down to coming to your house the night before a race to fix a bike issue – Thank You @DennisPhipps)!

Age: 48

Profession: I work as a Parts Manager @ TUUCI

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?
3 – 4 years ago I started running per doctor’s orders.  Even if I’ve never been an overweight person I’ve always suffered for high cholesterol and running was a good option to maintain it as low as possible without the need for any medication.  That’s how I started.  I didn’t look for any kind of guide or coaching, I just thought that I could wake up earlier every morning and simply go out and run, and that is what I did.  At some point some friends and family noticed I started to run and pushed me to sign up for the Miami Half Marathon.  At that point I started to look for someone to help me train.  I found a guy that sent me workouts weekly in text messages and it was fine for me.  I never thought how important it was to do these workouts with a coach running with you or at least evaluate your form, “so I just kept running” (Forest Gump – favorite movie)

What is your “A” race for this season?
I did this for 3 years in a row until early this year, I drove a good friend to a Triathlon in Key Biscayne.  I immediately fell in love with this kind of competition, totally different from a marathon.  I then started to look on how can I start training for this fascinating sport.  I started following coach Dany on Instagram and one day I decided to ask her how can I train for a triathlon and she recommended Full Circle Coaching.  The rest is history!

Since day 1, I felt great vibes from coach Erinne and I could see happiness and love for the sport all over the training sessions.

That was 5 months ago and to this day, I can say that it was one of the most important decisions I made in my whole life.  I never imagined that our bodies were capable to perform the way we do after such good training and coaching.  I never imagined that I was capable to perform the way I do at this point and there is still so much room for improvement in all aspects (body and mind); and the way Full Circle Coaching helps you train both is amazing!

Please share your BIG goals:
This season I will end up doing a Sprint Triathlon in Key West (my second tri).  For next year, I want to try longer distance races (Olympic and maybe a Half IronMan)

I really wish to continue improving my performance in all aspects, get faster, stronger physically and mentally and believe in myself.

Tell me about your successes so far:
I can say that my biggest improvement so far has been the swim, sometimes I don’t even believe how fast and well I’m doing in so short a period of time.  I have a new love: SWIM!

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:
The thing that has made the biggest difference in my journey is the way I feel.  I don’t think there are any words to describe how good I feel after each training session.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?
I will definitely recommend Full Circle Coaching as a great coaching group for every level, they don’t care if you are a beginner or an Ironman, they will always treat you like a champ!!

Rockstar Triathlete; Raul Aliaga

Coach’s Notes:

It has been so amazing watching Raul’s belief in his own abilities improve literally session to session. Learning about the the details of pacing yourself and as you say not BURN OUT” these are the keys to success my friend, and you have come so far. Super excited to help you on your triathlon journey there is so much more to learn! see you in 2019 for the 70.3!!! cant wait.

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?
I joined FCC because a friend was a member. I found out there was a lot more to becoming a triathlete than I expected. The push, the drive and encouragement I receive from the coaches combined with the great support from the rest of the team and my desire to push my limits made FCC an easy choice.

What is your “A” race for this season?
Although I always try to improve in all races and give them an “A” race,   my A race was MiamiMan Olympic distance.

Please share your BIG goals:
Since training with FCC I have realized that anything is possible and aspiring to reach higher goals is feasible. For now I have set my next goal as 70.3 during 2019. Maybe late 2019. Or maybe early 2020. Or maybe November 2020…I mean, eventually.

Tell me about your successes so far:
From being able to complete a sprint triathlon to first place in my category at MiamiMan, I have been able to podium twice this year in my category: First place in the Trilogy 2 Sprint, first place in MiamiMan Olympic. I got an honorable mention 4th place in Escape to Miami Olympic.

One of my biggest successes this year was completing the Escape to Miami swim without burning out, having a panic attack or being eaten by a shark. Overall, my 2018 goal was to complete at least one Olympic distance triathlon and I completed two, so I am ahead of the game.

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for the each of the following? Swim: Bike: Run: Nutrition/Health: Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved:
My biggest improvement definitely was in my swimming. I have seen my form, speed and endurance improve exponentially and every day it seems I reach a PR – I went from a rough 2:20/100 yards to 1:38 (just yesterday). I hope to continue seeing improvements in the water.   My form on the bike has improved and it immediately translates into more overall speed on the course. Coming off the bike it’s always hard to run, therefore practicing bricks is most important. My run after bike has improved and I have been able to pace myself without burning out towards the end.

In nutrition and health I have been able to maintain a constant  program without chronic injuries and physical setbacks due to training.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:

1.  Belonging to an awesome team
2.  Having awesome coaches
3.  Being awesome. Or believing I am awesome. If you can believe it, you can achieve it.

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?

Coming out of the water strong and focused, realizing that it’s no longer as difficult as it used to be, reaching high speeds on the cycle and finally crossing the finish line.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?

It’s quite simple: Do you wish to participate in a triathlon or do you really wish to live a triathlon with a supportive group of teammates, friends and coaches? With the FCC crew, there is no question that you will enjoy every minute, from training to crossing the finish line.

Rockstar Triathlete: Cindy Beuermann

Coach’s Notes:
Cindy is an extremely busy woman with a ton on her plate, but when she commits to a race it is with 100% effort.  She hits all her training usually by herself!  I used to see her more at sessions but with work she has to train early or late.  I help keep her accountable of course with Training Peaks and check-ins where I can see her progress and make sure she is hitting her numbers like I know she is capable of. Every race she takes on she has achieved a personal record in some aspect. I’m pretty sure the next one will be the big one.  Ironman… SO excited and happy you chose me for the journey.

Coach Erinne Guthrie

Age: 37

Profession: TV Programming Manager

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?
Some years ago I decided to get into triathlons and one person recommended Erinne. I contacted her and since the first day I felt I was in the perfect place with the perfect people.

What is your “A” race for this season?
For 2018 my A race was COZUMEL 70.3.

Please share your BIG goals:
When I started I was scary about racing. Erinne pushed me hard to registered for a Sprint and since then, I love racing and the feeling you got before, during and crossing the finish lane. I am now focused on half Ironman being my next one CARTAGENA 70.3. Once I get confident with the distance I want to complete the full ironman.

Tell me about your successes so far:
I have improved in all 3 sports. I was a swimmer but now I feel stronger and better, same with the bike and the running. Within one year, I PR 30 minutes from Miami Man to Cozumel 70.3 which makes me feel awesome.

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for the each of the following?  Swim: I used to swim with a different form. Listening to Erinne and following her advice, I have improved my swim not only in times but also in form and feeling stronger in the water with less effort.  Bike: I changed from road to tri bike which made a huge difference. My pace and times are much better now.  Run: As a runner, I struggled with both calves and Achilles. By improving my form and following treatments and therapies, now my running is pain free and faster.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:
1. Having a coach with me daily, following a clear plan.
2. Meet such amazing people in the group that inspires you every second.

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon? Having specific goals and work every day in order to achieve them.
Crossing the finish line feeling great and on times you planned, is the best feeling you can have ever.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?
Without a training plan and guidance, it’s like walking without knowing where to go.

“Loves the attention she gets from our coaches and feels the benefits.”

Coach’s Notes:
Nina is a super strong triathlete that just needed some video analysis and testing to prove to herself she was improving. Sometimes it has nothing to do with strength and power but where you apply the strength and power and how mobile you are through a range of motion that allows for the best hydro and aero-dynmaics and performances.  We have also used the training zones we created through the field testing we did and trained all her aerobic systems to fine tune her 70.3 pacing. Now we are on to IMFL if Hurricane Michael has not prevented us from getting there. But just as you PR’d across the board at your last 70.3- you will PR at your next Ironman- Guaranteed! Can’t wait to see that smile on your face across the finish line NINA!!!!

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?
I wanted to work with Erinne because I wanted a coach who would really pay attention to my challenges and help me grow as a triathlete.

What is your “A” race for this season?
Ironman Florida

Please share your BIG goals:
My biggest goal is to complete the Ironman swim feeling confident, which will make my bike and run better.   I’m hoping for 14 hours total, but that’s less important than the goal of finishing strong.

Tell me about your successes so far:
I started racing in 2014 with Escape to Miami Sprint, and since then I have done Olympics, 6 70.3’s and 3 Full IMs.  Every time I struggled in the swim.  So far I’ve only had one race this year, IM 70.3 Atlantic City, and for the first time I felt good getting out of the water – no panic attacks or need to stop and hang on to the lifeguards.  It made my day and I felt strong through the rest of the race.

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for the each of the following? Swim: Bike: Run: Nutrition/Health: Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved:
I PR’d in Atlantic City 70.3  in all three legs.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:
1.  One-on-one coaching in the swim has helped me work on the many facets of swimming – I had many form issues and I’m working to correct them.

2.  Previously I did a lot of training on my own, but I have found the long rides with teammates who push each other to be very helpful in improving my bike performance, as well as having a good time.

3.  Consistency – Full Circle has training sessions going on almost every day.

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?
It feels terrific to be strong, to train and compete with people of all ages.  I believe the insanity of pushing oneself actually can help keep us sane.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?
Training with coaches who pay attention to your individual performance is a totally different experience.  You can feel the difference after every workout.  Makes you want to show up.

Rockstar Triathlete: Priscilla Westfield Quest to Become a Professional Triathlete

Rockstar Triathlete: Priscilla Westfield

Coach’s Comments:
I feel honored to be working with Priscilla on her quest to become the first African American professional triathlete.

Her love of going as hard as you can at every training session and race is awesome, but can get you into trouble. This is actually where we are working. To have a build, peak and recovery for her races and choose races to help her accomplish her goals and set new personal records will be what it takes for her success.

Her work ethic to get in the hard training and recovery necessary are what impresses me most. She is always up for the challenge of the training even when she questions it at first. It’s not just about the training but the logistics of having a periodized training plan that has a purpose are going to make the difference in her success.  Lets do this Girl- You Got This! – Coach Erinne

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?
I chose FCC to assist me on my triathlon/health and wellness journey because I was AMAZED at the wealth of knowledge, motivation, and accountability demonstrated at one of the workshops I attended. Triathlon isn’t just a sport, but a venue to associate the lessons learned to life. FCC helps me stay disciplined, which inevitable spills over into my day-to-day life choices.

What is your “A” race for this season?
My “A” race this season would be ALL of them… No race will ever be perfect, but within each race are amazing learning opportunities, not to mention meeting tons of AWESOME people!!

Please share your BIG goals:
One of my BIG goals is to become the first Black Professional Triathlete

Tell me about your successes so far:
For my first year of training in the sport of triathlon, I have competed in several races this season:
Miami Mack Cycle Tri (1st AG)
Dare to Tri, Ft. Gordon (1st in AG)
Skidaway Tri in Savannah, GA. (1st Overall Female)
Jacksonville Tri Series (1st AG, 2nd Overall, 1st Overall, and Series Winner)
ITU Draft-Legal Sprint Distance World Championships in Gold Coast Australia (19th AG)
First time 70.3 Ironman in Augusta, GA. (12th in AG; 59th Div)

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for the each of the following? Swim: Bike: Run: Nutrition/Health: Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved:
The biggest improvements for me (HANDS DOWN) would be nutrition/health. Prior to training with Full Circle, I ate whatever I wanted. Now, instead of living to eat, I eat to live. I’m am more cautious about what I eat. I ask myself, “Is this going to benefit my body in some way?” If the answer is no, I save it for my treat days.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:
1. Nutrition
2. Accountability
3. Surrounding myself with encouraging and supportive people

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?
The adrenaline of the race! Fighting through the water, flying at high rates of speed down a hill, and digging deep at the end for sure!

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?
Life is short… DO IT!

Coach’s Notes:
Jenn although you ended up doing a duathlon FOR NOW, triathlon is just around the corner as your swim is getting stronger by the day.  Thanks for being a part of my first Couch to Tri program and proving that it works!  TWO, podiums in 8 weeks…….. Amazing!  I can see how hard you worked to accomplish your goals.  Way to go girl!  See you at training! – Coach Erinne Guthrie

Age:
40

Profession:
Finance Manager for the Department of OBGYN at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?
I was in an exercise slump and wanted to do something different to re-energize my workout routine.  I was about to rejoin a Crossfit gym right around July 4th, by chance, we had some friends over for dinner and the conversation of triathlon came up (he competed in ironman and such).  Training or even doing a triathlon had never crossed my mind, but after that night I thought why not!!! So for the next few days, I contacted different training groups and Erinne provided the best coaching advice and strategies, and she invited me to try it out for a week.  After a few days of training, I was hooked!

What is your “A” race for this season?
Since I didn’t start training till mid summer, I’ve only had the chance to compete in 2 duathlon races; Trilogy #3 and Trilogy Bonus.  I’d say Trilogy #3 was my “A” race this season because that was my first race, EVER! All I wanted to do was to finish the race.  But when I ended up on the podium in 3rd place of my age group, I just couldn’t believe it!

Please share your BIG goals:
Within the next 4 years, I want to take first place in age group in the Trilogy race series

Tell me about your successes so far:
2 for 2 on the podium and PR all around, notbad for a newbie!  3rd place in my first duathlon race and 2nd place in my second duathlon race (I was 25 seconds behind first place finisher, need to work on my strategies).

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for the each of the following? Swim: Bike: Run: Nutrition/Health: Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved:

Swim I started out as a non-swimmer and could barely doggie paddle my way across the pool.  After 2 months with Full Circle, I now can swim freestyle properly and successfully swim 50-100m without stopping.

Bike – I knew how to ride a beach bike but training on a road was a different story.  The nuances of constantly changing gears and the tricks to balance on the bike while taking a drink a of water, all new to me.  After the first race, I realized that I needed to work on my cycling speed because I was only averaging 14.1 mph. I Worked hard for the following 4 weeks and improved to 16.5 mph on the second race.

Run – Running was something I picked up about 7 years ago (all thanks to Crossfit), I used to hate running before that.  I knew I could do the sprint distance, I just needed to work on my pace.  Because I have a dance background, turning my feetoutwards was natural for me.  However, to be a proper and more efficient runner, I’ve had to be more conscience about keeping my legs and feet parallel (which feels super weird). And the difference on the 2 races were 9:07/mi to 9:01/mi and 10:13/mi to 10:10/mi, which cut the total running time down by 17 seconds. And my T2 on the second race was 1:17, that’s definitely one for the record book!

Nutrition/Health – I’ve been on Paleo/Keto for a while, so instead of the gel packets during the race, I use almond butter packets.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:
1. Training with the Full Circle Tribe that have the same goal and are there to help/cheer/support/motivate/inspire/push/encourage each other!

Georgia Physician AND Rockstar Triathlete; Daniel Kaminstein

Coach Erinne’s Notes:
I am so excited about the outcome of this season. Daniel and I have been working together for 2 years to get to Age Group Nationals injury free and qualify for Worlds. Already a strong, fast athlete always on the podium, with no formal coaching he has so much more speed to gain. After suffering a stress fracture last year and a few months of no running we were able to get his bike up to speed with the fast guys. This year we really dialed in the run. From his last 10k off the bike with a 6:15 minute/mile average at his B race to a 5:55 min mile average at Nationals, I’d say we accomplished what we set out to do, especially off of a 25 MPH bike average. Congratulations Daniel, way to Dream Big! Now for top 5 at Worlds!  Let’s do this!!!! –  Coach Erinne Guthrie

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey? I was looking for a coach who would help me with more than just fitness goals. I met Erinne at the Ride on Ryan Tri in Savannah and I liked her approach and attitude that FCC advocated.

What is your “A” race for this season? Just finished!- Age Group Nationals 2018, 10th place Age Group 40-44 and Qualified for World Championships in 2019 in Switzerland!

Please share your BIG goals: Being a great father to my four children. Becoming a more well rounded triathlete. Becoming competitive on the international level.

Tell me about your successes so far: My kids love coming to watch me race and three of them have now competed in kids triathlons. Tenth overall at age group nationals. First place overall among age group athletes at the NJ state championships. On the podium for all my races this season.

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for the each of the following?
Swim: My technique has improved dramatically over the past two years as a Full Circle athlete. With lot’s of video analysis and hands on form correction at Ultimate Tri Camp. Now, each race I focus on racing the swim rather then just using it as a warm-up for the bike.
Bike: Using power to make major gains in speed. I’m now cycling with the top guys in my age group.
Run: Stronger faster run off the bike. Being able to hold a fast run consistently off the bike is definitely my strongest asset now.
Nutrition/Health: Less carbs and more protein left me feeling much better during training and racing. The nutritional and sleep changes I’ve made have been equally as important as training improvements.

Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved: First time at age group nationals and I made the podium.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey: Power Meter. High intensity training sets. Better nutrition

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon? Getting to inspire my four boys to be active.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?
You can be a competitive triathlete without coaching but to really make significant advances you need someone on the outside who can give shape to your training and point you in the right direction.

Marine Biologist Benefits From Training Like An Athlete

Even though Bradley doesn’t consider himself an athlete he most assuredly is!  His commitment and desire to adopt a healthy lifestyle with nutrient dense foods, swimming and running has had some great results that I hope he will take with him for a lifetime.  I am so happy I could help you do your job with more swim skill and confidence and help you in your journey.  I wish you all the best and hope to see you out there swimming soon! – Coach Erinne Guthrie

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?

My research requires me to swim and dive for equipment that we keep at the bottom of rivers, streams, and bays in the Everglades to track the movements of sharks, alligators, snook, and several other large predators.  Full Circle Coaching was recommended as a coaching group that could help me learn to be more comfortable in the water and become a more efficient swimmer and free diver.

Tell me about your successes so far:

I am happy to report that the last round of fieldwork went incredibly well.  I could tell a huge difference in my ability to dive and swim after spending the last four months with Full Circle.

Please share your BIG goals:

As a beginner, I wanted to be able to swim a mile.  With Erinne’s help, I’ve shattered that goal.  Now I would like to be able to go for a 2 mile swim!

What were some of your biggest improvements in performance for the each of the following?

Swim: Before FCC, I could swim a couple of laps and just be exhausted.  Now I routinely swim 2000m in a practice and am much faster and more efficient.
Run: Before Full Circle, I was intensely over-striding and heel-striking. Now my technique is safer and I am much faster.  I’ve moved from roughly an 8 minute mile to a best 7 minute mile.
Nutrition/Health: I eat cleaner and do my best to plan my meals around proteins.  I’ve learned that a snack doesn’t have to be junk food.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:

  1. Even though I was focused on my swim, Erinne spent weeks improving my flexibility and giving me strength training exercises focused on body resistance.  This emphasis on whole body training has helped me even beyond swimming.
  1. We moved my nutrition away from a carb heavy diet to one balanced with protein and fat.  This really increased my stamina and energy level throughout the day and in workouts.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?

With the program, you learn how to train correctly to minimize the risk of injury and how to “train smarter, not harder.”  These are things that you will keep with you for as long as you are able to keep training.
