Is there a better way?

What’s up, you guys? Coach Erinne here. And I wanted to talk about the possibility of doing things a little differently.

I have so many athletes that sign up with me, and they give themselves enough time to achieve the goal and then life happens.

We have a certain amount of time for each distance of race.

For a sprint race, you need six to eight weeks. Olympic, typically eight weeks to 12 weeks is the minimum amount of time to train so that you show up at the race and you feel good across the finish line.

For a 70.3, four months minimum. And that’s with a base of training before that four months starts. That’s four months of focused training.

And then for an Ironman, you can get it done in four months. But six months to even a year is preferable.

And so why do I recommend all of that time? The reason is, because it’s just human nature that you get started, they’re super motivated. And after the first month to six weeks, things start to fall apart.

Whether they couldn’t control themselves and start as slow as I asked them to perhaps. Or they just pushed too hard too fast too soon. Whether they’re with me or with another coach, that’s a very common thing. You want to do better, you want to get faster. And you have this giant goal at the end of this time period. And your ego’s like, “You need to go faster. You need to do this better,” right?

But there is definitely a better way, okay?

So you guys have heard me talk about Strong before Long, and Fast before Far. But you can’t even go fast until you’re strong. You have to be strong first.

So what if you guys … Or you guys and gals who are doing triathlon and you’re tired of showing up to the race, all patched together with KT tape all over your body, because you’re hurting.

You’ve changed your time goal because you haven’t really put in the time training.

You procrastinated that first two to four months, and it was six weeks till the race. And then you finally kicked in and started training and doing what was required. Is this you??

It’s not those occasional, big giant workouts that help you cross the finish line. (they can help but) It’s actually the day-to-day, week-to-week, month-to-month training that gets you to the goal.

And the goals are different for everybody. If you have a goal just to cross the finish line and barely survive (I don’t really like to train people to do that). I’d rather have you cross the finish line and be like, “Hell yeah! I just kicked ass on that race. And I am ready for more. I am super proud of my accomplishment!”

Don’t get me wrong, every time you cross the finish line is a win.

But what if you could cross the finish line having done the work leading up to it?

Yes, Ironman, triathlon takes work. You can wing a sprint, you can wing an Olympic. But you cannot wing a 70.3. And you cannot wing an Ironman. I was at Cozumel 70.3 a few weeks ago and it was SO hot during the run. Everyone was suffering, but the ones who suffered less, trained more.

It’s just the truth! 70.3 and Ironman is hard, you guys. It is fucking hard. Excuse my French.

If you don’t put in the time, it’s harder. Right?

So what if you decided to do it a different way?

What if you decided to show up and start doing your strength training now?

You get that video analysis and you get that strength assessment and mobility assessment.

You start stretching, you start doing your strength training specific to Swim, Bike, Run.

You start aerobic, building your aerobic base by keeping your heart rate low. And just improving your fitness, right?

Then as four to six weeks go by, we start to test you. We create your training zones. Then you start to do your intervals. You’ve been consistent, you haven’t had a setback.

You’re taking care of your nutrition so you didn’t get sick. You didn’t get a cold, you didn’t catch that cold because you’re actually recovering when you’re supposed to.

You’re sleeping eight hours a night every night. You’re taking care of the whole body, the whole mind, the whole process to help you feel fucking amazing across the finish line.

And I’m proud to say it that at Full Circle Coaching, that’s what we strive to do for you guys.

We want you to have the whole package. The nutrition, race day nutrition, as well as day-to-day nutrition, immune boosting, making sure your sleep is dialed in. Supplements, yes. You can’t supplement your way into a healthier body. So nutrition comes first. But definitely, you need supplements to help support your journey. Triathlon is a big stressor in your life.

So from there, strength. As I said, strength and mobility are specific to the sport. And also make sure your strength is in other directions besides just going front and front forward like triathlon is.

Then put in the time to train. Show up to the track, whether it’s with me holding your hand or not.

So triathlon is a lonely sport. And sometimes people get upset when they have to do 100-mile bike rides on their own. Or they have to do an 18-mile bike ride. But you’re not racing with friends. Yeah, they might be at the same race, but it’s your race. It’s you against you. You compete with yourself, right?

So I’m here to ask you if you’re ready to try doing it a different way. And if you are, I have a great way to set yourself up.

So, I’m starting my Nutrition Essentials course this fall. Along with a strength training program to help you guys set up your year to have an epic year in 2023.

So that is two months, two to three months, the end of 2022 is going to allow you to have a kick-ass spring into the whole 2023 season, whatever your races are.

So I have athletes signing up for Puerto Rico 70.3, for Clash Miami in March. Guess what? The training starts now. And it doesn’t mean you can’t do a triathlon in the meantime. There’s Key West, right? There’s Miami Man that you can still keep up your Swim, Bike, and Run. But the focus is going to be on nutrition and strength.

Be intentional in living the life you want

Most people spend a lifetime clear on what they DON’T want for themselves.

That creates a constant state of yearning for more.

But it’s confusing for our brains because we often don’t get clear enough to tell our brain what we actually desire.

This creates a low likelihood of ever getting what we actually want – it’s because we aren’t being completely intentional.

A lot of people go years and years LIVING like that. Just doing it for no certain reason. Or for all reasons. Or for any reasons.

But if you want to get somewhere – if you want to create the thing that you want – then you must be intentional.

  • Why am I doing this?
  • Who’s it for?
  • What result do I want – and when?

It’s how you begin to establish a life of meaning.

A life that means what you want it to mean. That should include a healthy lifestyle, a proper weight, a good relationship with food, etc. 

A life of meaning must include other priorities, too.

But priorities are, by definition, not haphazard. And healthy habits don’t just form on their own.

Choose to live the life you envision for yourself. Then … CREATE IT!

I was psyched to hear from Tim when he reached out to me to train for Alligator Lighthouse swim.

He joined my Swim Essentials virtual training program since he lives in Illinois and we started with the video analysis and swim testing.

From there I gave him specific drills to correct his form along with swim specific strength and stretches as well as his online training program to reach his maximum potential for the 8-mile open water swim race.

Seeing him in our biweekly group coaching calls and checking in on his form monthly allowed him to achieve success despite never having swum in the open ocean for a race like this. He had a personal record in his 5k in Lake Michigan along the way to success in a very wavy open ocean Alligator Lighthouse swim. Super Proud of you Tim. Congratulations – You are a Rockstar Swimmer!

What is your “A” race for this season?

My A race was the Alligator Lighthouse swim.

To do another ocean swim in 2024. Maybe stick to a fresh water swim race Summer of 2023? Yet to be determined.

Tell me about your successes so far:

Completing my first ever Alligator Lighthouse swim in 6:37 min. It was tough being from the Midwest where we don’t have access to the ocean like Floridians do. However, I did my best given the fact that the current and waves were tough in getting to the lighthouse. 

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for the each of the following? Swim, Bike, Run, and Nutrition/Health. Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved:

PR time achieved for 3 mi Lake Michigan swim.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:

1. Support from Family and Friends.
2. Support from my work of allowing me to make this swim happen.
3. My brother doing an amazing job on navigating as my kayaker. 

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?

While I am currently not training for any triathlons, the only thing that excites me is competing against other swimmers in the race and training races.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?

Have fun with training, work hard and do your best!

Tell me about your successes so far:  What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for the each of the following? Swim: Bike: Run: Nutrition/Health: Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved:

One year ago I smoked, was overweight, and was very stressed with a new start-up.  On June 30, 2017, I decided that health and family life was to be my focus going forward, so that day I smoked my last cigarette as my family and I started a long overdue family vacation.  After 2 weeks of smoking detox, I felt I needed a “carrot” to keep me from smoking so I signed up for a sprint triathlon (Key West Tri).  The idea being that the training would keep me from smoking.  So I googled a Tri Training Plan for newbies and joined Erinne’s Swim Masters class in October of 2017, later to realize I needed a team to train with so I joined Full Circle in December.  It only took a running evaluation by Coach Erinne in December, to get me running a 5k without stopping/walking and I was hooked on Full Circle and Tri Training.

I consider doing and finishing the Las Olas Sprint Tri a huge success and I now have a benchmark to beat on future sprints planned for the year.  Another big success so far, is completing a 5k race this weekend without walking with a PR of 27:10!

Swim – I am swimming faster and longer than ever;  Bike – from never riding a road bike (I didn’t know how/why to use bike gears) to a 19.1 mph average in Las Olas Sprint Tri;  Run – from the KB Lighthouse Run 5k time of 31:05 (run/walk) to the Patches 5k time of 27:10 (PR) without walking!!!

On the Health/Nutrition side I am still smoke free, did Erinne’s prescribed “Gut Cleanse” in January and have lost 10 lbs since October of last year.  In terms of biggest Goal achieved – finishing my first triathlon (Las Olas Sprint) in under 1 hr and 30 min, which I finished in 1 hr 24 min.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:
1.  Erinne’s evaluations, especially the swimming and running.
2.  The “Gut Cleanse” to start the year.
3.  Training with my new family, the Full Circle Team, which supports, pushes and encourages you to get better and faster while still having fun.

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon? Being called an “athlete”  🙂

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?
“Just do it,” it will change your life for the better.

What is your “A” race for this season? My “A” race was Ironman Augusta 70.3, I decided to sign up for my first Ironman after completing some sprints and I definitely needed to seek help to be ready for this race

Please share your BIG goals: My goals have changed as I have progressed in life as triathlete

1.- Learn how to swim – As a late bloomer in swimming my first goal was to shift from “swim to survive” to an average swimmer, I couldn’t swim the length of a pool, now I can swim 1.2 miles with no sweat espcially after I took Erinne’s Swim Essential’s last Spring.

2.- Complete my first half ironman – I did this in Augusta in September 2018, I trained for about 7 months to achieve this goal, I completed my first half in 7 hrs.

3.- Improve my fitness- My fitness was below average before I started training, I could barely run for five minutes. Now I can tell I am in the best shape of my life!

Tell me about your successes so far:  What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for the each of the following? Swim: Bike: Run: Nutrition/Health: Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved:

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey: 
1. Swim 400m- 25 min to 9 min, I can swim 1.2 miles and enjoy it
2. Bike 10mi – 39 min to 29 min, ride for more than 60 miles without bonking
3. Run 5K – 47 min to 28 min, running is a part of my life now

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon? Being involved in triathlon and endurance sports enables you to push your limits and rediscover your own boundaries on what you think is possible and the things that you can achieve. It allows you to enter into a deeper connection between your body and mind

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?. This will be a life-changing experience, there are not many things in life that can give a return on investment like this program, the returns are a greater and improved health, increased fitness and the satisfaction of achieving your goals and pushing your limits to new levels are priceless.

Coach Erinne’s Notes: I met Carlos at the Bacardi Triathlon Lunch and Learns a gave last year and was super excited he decided to join the Full Circle  team. Despite his hectic work schedule he has made some awesome improvements in all aspects of his triathlon performance. Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?  I moved from Mexico a year and half ago and I was looking to join a triathlon team, after Erinne’s visit to Bacardi I was engaged with her training platform and the fact that she is an experienced athlete.

What is your “A” race for this season?  Miami 70.3 in October

Please share your BIG goals:  I’ve always been and on/off triathlete for the last 4 years. My primary goal is to have during 2018 a first time full macro-cycle training and to achieve a 70.3 race under 6 hrs. In the long term, before my 40th birthday I would like to race a full Ironman®.

Tell me about your successes so far:  After joining Full Circle Coaching, I had PRs in Sprint and International distances and for the 1st time I am able to run half a marathon without walking and increasing my average riding speed from 16 mph to 20 mph which for me is a big accomplishment.

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for the each of the following?
Swim: First, to be able to swim 1.2miles continuously. Improving my pace from 2:40 /100m to 2:20/100m
Bike: Average speed improved from 16mph to 20mph
Run: Average speed improved from 11minutes per mile to 9.5 minutes per mile
Nutrition/Health: Since joining FC I was able to loose weight from 200lbs to 182lbs. Also, I had the most important advise from Erinne about fueling correctly for training and racing.

Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved:  Sprint: 1:21:29, International: 2:36:08, 70.3: From last year Miami Miami 70.3 I reduced my swimming by 17 minutes and until mile 30 before having an issue by hitting a hole during the bike leg on the bike I had a 24 minute reduction of my time.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:
1. Full support from my wife and her encouraging me to keep going
2. Personal attention from Erinne
3. Learning how to fuel and following the training plan as is, even if it is hard to follow.

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?  The fact that you are racing against yourself and being able to see little and major improvements day by day.  Being part of an exclusive community of people challenging themselves to be a better person and be really committed to achieve personal goals.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?  Do not hesitate, trust yourself, the coaches and the program. Try it for one month and you’ll see a better you than one month before. You’ll love it!!

Christina Avila Achieves Rockstar Triathlete Success

Coach Erinne’s Notes: Christina was a true beginner when she first joined us. She joined at the lowest level just attending the morning classes and she was focused on only the distance of the race and not concerned with form, technique or speed work and strength. By simply attending classes- NO ONLINE program at all, she has made some amazing improvements. The Full Circle Coaching work hard to make sure each athlete get the attention they need at every training session. Christina’s improvements include no more knee pain due to improved strength and flexibility to getting faster by including intervals and skills training at the group sessions. Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?  Initially, I chose FCC to help me on my triathlon journey because I needed more explicit coaching for running and strength training.

What is your “A” race for this season?  I am unsure what my “A” race will be for this coming season but I would like to complete a 70.3. I would like to do the Olympic distance Escape to Miami so I can swim from the island.

Please share your BIG goals:  To be able to complete a 70.3 without falling apart.  To continue getting stronger and building endurance.  To be faster in the swim, bike, and run.

Tell me about your successes so far:  I am very happy to say that I recently completed my very first international distance triathlon. It was very challenging for me but I was able to finish it despite the weather. I have also completed several sprint triathlons that have consecutively shown improvement in speed.

What were some of your biggest improvements in performance for the each of the following? Swim: Bike: Run: Nutrition/Health: Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved:  Each sprint triathlon I did this year showed improvement in the swim, bike, run, and transition. My swim improved by almost two minutes from the first trilogy to the fourth, and my run by six minutes. I recently PR’d my 5k running time, and completed my first international distance triathlon.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:
1. 
Being consistent in training
2. 
Getting more individualized attention during track
3. 
Taking part in the Friday strength training class that has made me stronger and eliminated my knee pain.

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?  I love being involved in triathlon! There is so much to be excited about! I am not the fastest, but I love being able to challenge myself and see improvement over time. There is nothing like getting to the finish line and knowing that you made it! It is also great to be part of a group of people that share the same passion and are nothing but supportive and encouraging to one another.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?  I would say to definitely try it out.  I love starting my day with a training session, especially the Wednesday swim class and the Friday strength training class.  The FC group is very welcoming, and it is very motivating to be among such incredible athletes.

Even after 6 years Ironman Triathlete Steven Bolitho is Still Getting Faster and Staying Healthy

Coach Erinne’s Notes: Steve is an amazing athlete. He never gives in to any setback and hits every training session rain, shine or cold. We were all concerned with his heart condition, but instead of it being a setback he has come through surgery stronger and faster than ever. He just set a new personal record at Miami Man 2018 and is hitting new speed goals for his long course goal of breaking 12 hours at his next Ironman®. The best part about Steve is his sense of humor and sarcasm- he always makes the team laugh and we love having him on our Team. Please share your BIG goals: I am trying to go Sub 12 hours at Ironman®  Texas.

Tell me about your successes so far: I have finished approximately 30 races including Sprint, Olympic, Half and Full Ironman® events, 2 mile swims and a plethora of run distances. My last Ironman® I finished in 12:22 and look forward to beating that time.

What were some of your biggest improvements in performance for the each of the following? Swim: Bike: Run: Nutrition/Health: Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved: My swim time has gone from 2:30/ 100 pace to 1:45/100 pace; Bike average power went from 190  to 210 watts and my run times have remained constant despite some setbacks. What everyone needs to understand is I achieved these goals after having an ablation surgery to control A-fib and being diagnosed with a bicuspid heart value with an ascending aortic aneurysm. Erinne remained not just supportive when I received this news and went through surgery but also actively assisted in helping me control some of the side effects including breathing difficulties and elevated heart rate. I am absolutely convinced I would not only have given up this sport when I was given my diagnosis but also reverted to an unhealthy lifestyle without her support, understanding and coaching.

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon? The feeling of achievement continues to drive me and every time I race I look forward to seeing my improved results.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program? Stop procrastinating and take the leap.

Beda Molina achieves Rockstar Triathlete Success (2nd year in a row) and Places top 10 at Ironman Miami 70.3, 2017

Coach Erinne’s Notes:
This lady never ceases to impress me. Her energy is infectious and wow can she dance! Most importantly, her dedication to her beloved sport of triathlon is unmatched. Whether she is with us at the group sessions or on her own she does not miss her training, even in rain and wind. Getting up at 4:30 is part of her routine often, but she makes training a priority. I am so happy she has done the rest, recovery and strength training over the previous 6 months to eliminate her hamstring injuries and race these 2 races back to back with great success. Using the tools that I give her we predicted her last 2 races within 3 minutes of her goal time. Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?  I Chose Full Circle Coaching because I trust Coach Erinne Guthrie’s knowledge, and I love the group of people in the team.

What is your “A” race for this season? I had two “A” races this season, Ironman 70.3 Augusta, and Ironman 70.3 Miami.

Please share your BIG goals: My big goals are to keep lowering my race times, avoid injuries, and prepare for an excellent full distance race next season.

Tell me about your successes so far: My successes so far, are in the results achieved in my three races this season. I was able to win AG in my first race this season, Olympic distance and quite competitive group.  Then finishing a sub 6 hrs half distance at Augusta felt really good, and in Miami I was able to place top ten in my division.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:
1.  First, the swim keeps getting better, I exit the water with a ton of energy, I will be focusing in the swim in the next few months.

2. I can now put together a strong bike and a strong run within the same race, which is very important, I definitely have improved in both disciplines.

3.  I have been able to stay away from any significant injury and have maintained a good health in general this season, so I intend to continue to follow Coach’s guidance in strengthening workouts and nutrition.

The things that have made the biggest difference are: following a training plan and being consistent with my training sessions and nutrition and being able to make a good race plan with accurate and realistic race times, something I learned from coach Erinne, which is an important tool as I have recently found out.

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?  What excites me about triathlon is getting to know so many people that are out there doing what I’m doing, the sport is in my opinion growing more each year particularly for us not so young athletes, also getting good results in race day and watching my conditions get better with the training are both exciting.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program? To those considering joining our training program, I would recommend to join, it is certainly has helped me.

Chris Kinnaird Achieves Rockstar Triathlete Success

Coach Erinne’s Notes: So Chris is my neighbor who I casually gave some running tips to here and there, which allowed him to break his 4 hour marathon goal! He kind of thought I might know what I was talking about after that. Then he won a free entry into the Ironman Miami 70.3 at our Holiday party and I thought for sure he would give the entry away, but I was pleasantly surprised when he decided to go for it! The rest is history. One year transformation from “runner only” to IM 70.3 Success. His biggest limiter being the swim, he knocked it out of the park on a seriously tough race day. You are truly a RockStar Chris! I know you make me and your family proud. Can’t wait to see what you say yes to next!!!

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey? This all started when I won a raffle for a free Ironman 70.3 registration. What a mistake that was! But that set me on a path of challenges, struggles, accomplishments, and success that I never imagined in my wildest dreams.

What is your “A” race for this season?  See above

Please share your BIG goals:  See above (Although I now am looking forward to new goals for next season, such as competing in a full Ironman or running my first ultra-marathon)

Tell me about your successes so far:  If you had told me a year ago that I would complete 6 triathlons this year, including Ironman Miami 70.3, I would have told you that you were nuts! I raced in my first-ever sprint triathlon in April, and completed a 70.3 less than 6 months later.

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for each of the following? Swim: Bike: Run: Nutrition/Health: Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved: A year ago, I couldn’t swim one length of the pool. Now I can say that I swam 1.2 miles in the ocean. Obviously that didn’t happen overnight. The FCC training program kept me focused on my goals.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:
1. Having a support group of like-minded athletes (“crazy people”) who are training alongside you and holding you accountable
2. Working with a coach who frequently checks in on you and knows your personal goals and abilities and pushes you to reach beyond your limits.
3. Establishing a set of short, medium, and long-term goals outlined by your coach to keep you motivated throughout the season

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?  Coming into triathlon as “just a runner” I now have confidence in myself to go after goals that I used to think were impossible. 

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program? If you want to see your entire life transformed in a few short months, do it!
