Overall a Really Good Experience; Rockstar Triathlete Wendy Whitlow

Overall a really good experience; Rockstar Triathlete Wendy Whitlow

Coach’s Notes:

Wendy, YOU DID IT, You’re a triathlete! As a total beginner Wendy is an awesome coachable athlete. Showing up to training and coach calls, taking notes asking questions, she was here for business.

She also had a lot of FEAR about what was possible for her.

As her coaches explained to her, skill and repetition yield confidence and motivation, with consistency you get better and better!

Such is the case with Wendy!

She mentions terrible results with regard to the amount of time parts of the race as compared with other athletes… but I want to remind you Wendy, this is a competition against yourself and seeing you come from zero to crossing the finish line was so sweet!

Please own that and never forget that you can do anything you set your mind to. Thanks for choosing Full Circle Coaching for your journey!

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?

It has been on my bucket list to complete a triathlon for over 5 years. After successfully losing a significant amount of weight… 150 pounds to be exact, with my best friend’s encouragement, we agreed to seek professional training. Her research led us to FCC.

What is your “A” race for this season?

The Miami 305 Sprint TRI

Please share your BIG goals:

Honestly my biggest goal was to make it out of the swim without having to be pulled out.

And if I made it out, my other fear was conquering the Rickenbacker Causeway bridge. I had only done it once with Coach Jacqueline. Well twice over and back. I freaked out and walked my bike down the remaining way and she stayed by my side on the return. So my goal was to successfully complete without her or my best friend.

Tell me about your successes so far:

I made it out of the water and over the bridge. Times were terrible but my run was decent.

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for the each of the following? Swim, Bike, Run, and Nutrition/Health. Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved:

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:

  1. Speed and run drills helped improve my running
  2. While I still have panic in the water, I have a better understanding of the mechanics and believe with practice I will only get better.

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?

The ability to push myself beyond what my brain thinks I could accomplish and being around a community of other athletes that are so supportive.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?

I say if you can afford the investment, it is worth it, especially if you live in the Miami area. I had hoped to spend more time training with others for the accountability. Virtual training is good if it’s what you have to work with but I like someone who can give immediate feedback or corrections. When alone I didn’t have that. Overall, a really great experience.

The group calls are great! I accomplished what I didn’t believe was possible. Especially with my swimming, learning to breathe properly is everything. I feel prepared and confident to complete a sprint distance triathlon!”

How do you know?

How do you know?

So many of my swimmers join my program and say
“Wow, I did not know, I didn’t know how to swim!”

So how do I evaluate if you can swim or not from a coach perspective ?

I assess you!
First with a swim test (if you have the endurance and fitness to do so).

Here’s the test:
After a short 10 min warm up in the water,
Swim a 400 (16 laps in a 25 meter or yard pool) for time
Rest 10 minutes
Swim a 200 for time

These numbers tell me what the focus of your swim training should be. Even if I don’t see you swim!

If your 400 is over 6 minutes or over 3 minutes for the 200
I know that technique work should be your focus.

I actually don’t recommend longer swims for swimmers in this situation, as I want them to focus on correcting bad form techniques, rather than reinforcing bad technique with longer swims!

How do I correct form?
2nd with a Video analysis.

The camera never lies!
And as humans our body awareness in the water is skewed because it’s not our natural habitat!

I like to see video of you swimming from each side for a full length of the pool, from the front and back, moving to and from the camera and underwater from the front and sides.

From there I can create a program of step by step exercises, drills and corrections to improve your swim!

Then it’s up to you to get in the water and do your homework!

It’s not a miracle solution; nothing will change unless you do the work. It’s not hard work;- it’s just time in the pool and on land!  Doing swim specific strength and stretch is essential to becoming a better swimmer
But the key is also going slow, being intentional with your movements in the water with the drills I prescribe.

Does it work? Hell yes!!
Every single one of my athletes just retested their 400 and 200 from earlier in the year and many are under that 6 and 3 min goal.
Others are getting closer!!

The importance of daily rituals

The importance of daily rituals

You’ve probably heard someone complain about being in a rut.

Successful people swear by the power of daily rituals and routines to help them stay in flow. They use them to build the groundwork of their lives and to continue growing.

Here’s a famous quote from Aristotle on the topic:

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

Routines help you manage your time.

They prepare you for the unexpected.

They help you preserve energy, strength and worry for more important things.

Just imagine what a wreck you’d be without any daily rituals.

Think about the habit of brushing your teeth each morning. It was ingrained in you as a child, so you don’t even think about it. And as a reward, you have dental health and social acceptance that would’ve been denied otherwise, right?

I have a morning and evening routine that enhances my mindset, energy and allows me to give from a place of over flow.

Where do you think you need some new habits now?

Here are some examples that lots of people find helpful just to get you thinking:

  • Start the day with prayer, gratitude, meditation or light movement.
  • Avoid email first thing in the morning to keep your perspective on stressors.
  • Drink 24 ounces of spring or filtered water with a pinch of seasalt
  • Eat a healthy breakfast every day.
  • Make a daily to-do list that includes exercise or at least some form of intentional movement.
  • Go to bed and wake up at the same times every night and day.
  • Play music or use essential oils to enliven your atmosphere for activity or rest.

Habits that support a healthy lifestyle are particularly important.

If you want to stay at a healthy weight, for example, then you need to take daily action to eat right and exercise.

Would it help to build purposeful action around these ideas into your routine? To meal-prep on Sunday afternoons after your grocery shopping, for example? Or to go to the gym every Monday, Wednesday and Friday on your way home from work? Put it all in your calendar.

Studies show that connecting a new habit to an existing one increases your chances of success.

Habits are self-care in action.

“This has been a great year” Rockstar Triathlete: Enrique Raphael

Rockstar Triathlete: Enrique Raphael

Coach’s Notes:

Enrique’s journey has been truly inspirational!

Definitely not a straight shot to the top, with a hamstring injury and a twisted ankle, he now knows how to listen to his body and train in a way that allows him to keep improving race after race. Losing 20 lb’s is also an added bonus!

From his first time on the podium in short course racing last year, his success at Ultimate Tri Camp in March and now his very first 70.3.

Although the swim was cancelled he delivered exactly as was expected for the bike and run, averaging 21 MPH for the 56 bike and 10 min/ miles for the 13.1.

Congratulations Enrique… let’s get the sub 6 hour 70.3 in the books this year. You are a Rockstar Triathlete!

Age:

I will be 59 this year

Profession:

Engineer

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?

I met Erinne few years ago and I did the Swim Essentials and it was a good experience, then last year I decided to take triathlon more seriously registering for the NYC triathlon and I contacted her again; we went over the six month Triathlon Transformation Program and I became part of the FCC Tribe!

It has been an incredible year and I culminated it with the 70.3 Gulf Coast this past weekend.

What is your “A” race for this season?

My “A” race was the 70.3 this past weekend; now I have to think about the next one; probably another 70.3 this year.

Please share your BIG goals:

After racing in Panama City, I am sure I can complete a 70.3 in less than 6 hours if I keep working and improving my technique and fitness; this is a sport of consistency and continuous learning!

Tell me about your successes so far:

This has been a great year; I was able to go from completing a Sprint Race back in May 2021 to the 70.3 last weekend.

Beyond the races I can say the major success is that I feel great, I am healthy and I am blessed with the life I have and the people I share it with.

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for each of the following? Swim, Bike, Run, and Nutrition/Health. Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved:

Now I feel very confident swimming long distances in open water, I believe I am stronger on the bike, I have improved my running technique a lot and I have made some changes to my nutrition and my lifestyle because of all that I have learned through the year.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:

  1. Being part of a team makes a big difference; besides all what we get from the coaches, everybody in the team adds value to your training with comments, recommendations, etc.
  2. Following a well designed program based on your capabilities and measuring your progress is key in improving your performance
  3. What we learn beyond the training: Nutrition, sleep, meditation, yoga, etc.; all are game changers!

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?

It is always something to learn, it is always a new challenge, It is always competing against yourself to be better, and despite being a one person sport, you are always surrounded and sharing with excellent people with the same kind of mentality and objectives.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?

If you are committed to improving your health, your lifestyle and you are competitive, you are in the right place to join a great group of people thriving for the same.

What saying “I’m too busy” really means

What saying “I’m too busy” really means

Can we get real for a minute?

It’s about how “busy” you say you are.

  • “I’m too BUSY to make healthy meals.”
  • “I’m too BUSY to exercise regularly.”
  • “I’m too BUSY to manage my stress.”
  • I’m too BUSY to train for that triathlon I’ve always dreamed of

If you’re using that old excuse to avoid making positive changes for yourself, then I have some tough love for you:

It’s just not true. You are NOT too busy.

Seriously, as hectic as your daily life can be, I implore you to remember this:

Many people are way busier, and they still manage to eat right, exercise, and generally take care of themselves better than you’re doing right now.

Single parents working two jobs and going to night school, for instance – plenty of them make the time to live a healthy life, while also going to work, raising the kids, studying, and tending to countless other demands, just like you.

It all comes down to individual choices. You can decide to stop feeling exhausted by the victim mentality – to joyfully take control again with a fresh outlook.

CHOOSE to prep a few dinners you can have waiting in the freezer so you’ll be more likely to drive past the drive-through.

CHOOSE to enjoy a workout instead of mindlessly channel surfing.

CHOOSE to express gratitude for the bounty of your life, to manage your priorities — and even to learn to say “no” sometimes!

We all get the same amount of time in a day. It’s up to you how to spend it.

I’m shocked at how I feel in the water: Swim Testimonial, Frantz Dunel

I’m shocked at how I feel in the water: Swim Testimonial, Frantz Dunel

Coach’s Notes:
Frantz has come a very long way in the swim. Already a very strong runner, we started training for a sprint triathlon.

The swim was definitely his limiter. Being so strong, it can sometimes be difficult to learn that in the swim its all about being SMOOTH, and not pushing hard. After joining my Swim Essentials program and learning the step by step progression of learning how to swim freestyle for triathlon, Frantz has learned how to glide and relax more in the water so he can save energy to then be able to bike and run strong.

Congratulations Frantz, you are officially a SWIMMER!

Why did you want to learn to swim?
1) Well I never knew that I didn’t know how to swim SWIM until FC asked me to swim a few laps in the pool. Jumping off a boat and waddling around for a few minutes or a few strokes to the edge of the pool is not real swimming is what I realized. I wanted to learn the proper technique to further challenge myself, be able to compete in triathlons and to continue being as well rounded as possible for my kids. We live in Miami, we are always traveling to beach destinations or in a pool. Swimming is critical.

What was the hardest part in the process?
2) The hardest part was overcoming the mindset that it was impossible for me to become a swimmer because I had not been doing it for 10+ years like the rest of the group or swimmers at the pool. Swimming I have found to be one of the most challenging sports because it is extremely technical. I found and still find it difficult to put all the pieces together in order to swim “effortlessly”…balance, proper pull, full rotation on the side for breathing, long reach, straight legs and kicking from the hips etc etc.

How does it feel different in the water vs 6 months ago?
3) I am proud and somewhat shocked at how I feel in the water today vs 6 months ago. Aside from the exhausting swim workouts, I genuinely look forward to getting in the water as I feel much more comfortable and confident. As I swim my laps I can hear Coach Erinne in my head and I use that to correct my form, slow down and try and glide vs a frantic gasping for my next breath.

I look forward to moving up to the Olympic distance in May!

My holistic Nutrition Program literally saved my career in triathlon and actually my life. I was eating all the wrong foods for me based on what I was taught in higher education nutrition programs and it pretty much nearly killed me!

This is why I include nutrition as an essential part of all of my athlete’s training programs.

So,  jump on in if you’ve not learned all you can about your personal nutrition journey. All the details of what’s included are in the link.

Are you are a little foggy about your nutrition? I have a few spots left for my 6 week Nutrition Essentials course… Starts tomorrow! Register HERE or schedule a call with me if you have any questions.

Rockstar Nutrition: Christine Coppola

Rockstar Nutrition: Christine Coppola

Coach’s comments:

Christine is a rockstar triathlete who has completed half and full Ironmans but had gotten out of a training/eating rhythm that worked well for her.

I was thrilled when she wanted to learn more about how to approach training, racing and her lifestyle from a more holistic approach by joining my Nutrition Essentials

She is also a busy mom to a 4 year old, loving wife and successful executive with NBC. In other words busy and on the go!

Her success below is awesome because she didn’t force it or rush it.

She realized that small changes made over time had the best outcome.

She didn’t make every call and only attended for 30 minutes sometimes but went back and listened later when she had time.

With the online platform that is included you have all the information at your fingertips to use a resource on your own time. This is how it has to happen sometimes! And that is OK.

Sometimes to achieve the results we desire it takes a little longer, but the changes stick! You take the information given and tweak it to work for you all with my guidance and support!

So proud of you for all your hard work and success. Let’s keep it going on the way to your next big DREAM!

What positive results did you achieve during your Nutrition Essentials Course?

I was able to eat clean, drink more water and be more cognizant of my overall well being. I also learned a lot!

Did you lose weight or gain according to your desired goal?

Yes!

If you lost or gained weight, how much?

9 lbs

Was the program every thing you expected? Please explain:

Yes – it was actually more than I expected!

Did your thoughts about what is possible for your lifestyle change?

Definitely. It seemed so daunting and complicated when I tried to make changes alone, but this helped me break it down into manageable pieces. It also provided a forum to ask questions.

What was the easiest thing to implement and what did you have the most trouble with?

More water, less sugar, eating more balanced were easiest. I am still catching up/re reading on supplements info.

Did your sleep pattern improve?

Yes

Are you continuing to hydrate properly?

Yes

What specific changes in your nutrition did you make?

I stopped using creamer in my coffee, went from 16 oz a day to 8 oz a day and using recipe for brain boost coffee. I am drinking more water. I am also using the approved foods list to shop and prep meals. Also not buying food with lots of ingredients and really checking sugar.

Would you recommend this course to others?

Definitely

Did you clean up your toxic load? Please explain:

I am working on it! Starting with cleaning products then makeup hair etc.

How to Eliminate Excuses

How to Eliminate Excuses

When we were kids, we could find excuses for anything, right?

For not going to bed on time.

For fighting with siblings.

For not getting homework done.

As adults, we’ve learned to take responsibility for our actions and failures – at least most of the time. But there’s always a supply of excuses waiting within reach whenever we want to use one, including about our health and fitness.

Your spouse, your kids, the traffic.

Your boss.

Your biorhythms.

On and on…

So how do we get rid of this childhood habit once and for all?

Here are some of my best ideas.

1.     Realize you’re only hurting yourself when you find a scapegoat. It doesn’t hurt the coach, your significant other, your doctor … anyone else.

2.     Let go of the persecution complex. Traffic doesn’t happen to just you. Everyone’s boss throws a wrench in their plans sometimes. Nobody “feels like it” all the time, even those who seem divinely motivated to make it look easy.

3.     Stop comparing yourself to others. It only sets you up to feel “less than” and not good enough, which undermines your motivation and negative self-talk.

4.     Seek inspiration from others who keep getting up every time they fall. This can be someone at work, a friend at the gym, or even a figure in fiction.

5.     Acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses alike. Let’s say you’re good at getting to the gym on time, but you don’t work as hard as you want. OK – great! How can you build on that? Work out with a friend or trainer, take a group class, or meditate for a few moments before you walk in? What you don’t want to do: Tell yourself it’s someone else’s fault that you’re not quite hitting it.

6.     Scratch the surface. What’s underneath the need to make an excuse? Are you afraid of something? Feeling insecure or intimidated? Whatever it is, a little introspection can help identify the source, and from there, you’re closer to eliminating it.

7.     Repeat success. When something works for you, repeat it. Think about why – and how you can apply the lesson elsewhere.

I’d love for you to hit reply and let me know which tip is most helpful!

Rockstar Triathlete Matthew Kuscher

Rockstar Triathlete Matthew Kuscher

Coach’s Notes: Matt reached out to me after seeing one of our own- Jenny Lee Molina complete her first triathlon with us using our Beginner Triathlon Program.

He had zero experience in swim, bike or run. We got to work with evaluations first to assess any weaknesses, and find him a bike- which he borrowed from one of my other athletes (Thanks Jesse Jimenez!)

Due to the nature of the restaurant business and late nights, he could not make the early morning group training sessions, so we trained 1 on 1.

This is a great way to get the focused attention to learn to swim, bike and run quickly. After just 8 weeks he accomplished his goal 2 triathlons with a smile on his face, leaner healthier body.

Matt’s best compliment came when he said” I hate this stuff but for some reason I am enjoying the process so you must be doing something right!”

Thanks Matt for trusting us with your triathlon journey. CAn’t wait to see what’s next!

Age: 43

Profession: Restaurateur

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey? I was inspired by my friend Jenny Lee Molina and her journey to her first triathlon with Full Circle Coaching on social media.

What is your “A” race for this season? My A race was just to complete my 1st triathlon. I did the Huntington’s disease race in February as a C race, (training race) and then the Clash Sprint Triathlon a few weeks later.

Please share your BIG goals: To start my journey of a healthier lifestyle

Tell me about your successes so far: I have completed 2 and have plans to complete two more by mid summer.

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for each of the following? Swim, Bike, Run, and Nutrition/Health. Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved:

My 1st swim was very tough in the Huntington’s sprint triathlon, so I trained a little extra in the ocean and by my 2nd race, my swim was the easiest part even though it was twice the distance of the first race. I was proud of myself for that.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:
1. A healthier diet
2. Accountability; having a coach push me to make sure I don’t slack.

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?
I never thought in a million years, I would do this kind of training and that’s what excites and motivates me to do it more. It’s still so foreign to me and that’s exciting.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?
It’s great because you mix it up, you don’t have to love running, swimming or cycling but if you like each a little then every day you get to switch it up. I love not training the same thing every day so it never feels boring!
