Rockstar Triathlete: Jesse Jimenez

Rockstar Triathlete: Jesse Jimenez

Coach’s Notes: To take up the sport of triathlon at age 63 is pretty gutsy and that is a great way to describe Jesse! In one year, he has become the triathlete he set out to become. He finished his first 70.3, just a few weeks ago, feeling amazing and signed up for a full Ironman in 2021. He also PR’d his International distance triathlon. An inspiration to our whole team to be an example of what’s possible at any age! Way to go Jesse, Ironman is calling!!!

Age: 64
Profession: Electrical Contractor

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey? I met Erinne at a race clinic for Mack Cycle for my first Olympic distance triathlon. After finishing that race (and it did not go well), I realized I was going to have to be coached.

What is your “A” race for this season?

Game on 70.3, just a few weeks ago and next is Florida Ironman 2021

Please share your BIG goals:

Complete Florida Ironman with best times on swim, bike and run.

Tell me about your successes so far:

Recently finished 70.3 triathlon at Ft Pierce.

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for the each of the following? Swim: Bike: Run: Nutrition/Health: Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved: I’ve learned a lot about nutrition all around and while training. Plays a big part in performance as well as getting enough rest.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:
1. Definitely tri-camp (www.ultimatetricamp.com). Very focused takes you to next level.
2. Biking in NC was a big thing. Pushing on the bike in the hills.
3. Just being consistent about training, doing the work, showing up for work outs on a daily basis.

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon? Well now I’m pretty well obsessed about it and the thought of going to Ironman, which I did not think possible at first, but now I know I can with help from Full Circle Coaching.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program? Do it!

It’s what you do right now that makes a difference

It’s what you do now that makes a difference

Are you psyched for the new year? Ready to make some changes once the calendar flips?

Here’s a hot secret: You don’t have to wait!

The choices you make today will determine where you are on January 1. Instead of letting these weeks go by unproductively (or even worse), wouldn’t you rather kick off 2021 with a few weeks of healthy living behind you?

Commit today to make the right choices and take some healthy steps FOR TODAY ONLY, to eat well, exercise, and manage your stress. To wake up tomorrow feeling better than if you did the opposite.

Then do it again tomorrow – and repeat your best efforts every day as we head into January.

Those kinds of daily commitments are what will help you succeed all year, and for your whole lifetime.

Here is a simple one you can do starting today that has surprising benefits- Drink 1/2 your bodyweight in ounces of water daily with a pinch of real sea salt. Observe how you feel after 1 week of implementing this simple step.

Please let me know. Don’t confuse Simple for easy, because most of you won’t do it, because its too hard!!!

So, what are you waiting for?

“Later” is a lie

“Later” is a lie

“Later” is a lie we tell ourselves to feel better.
“Later” is stated out of fear, never necessity.
“Later” actually means “never” in regard to reaching fitness goals and dreams.

It temporarily lets us off the hook without admitting we’re giving up our dreams. We can EASILY convince ourselves that timing, circumstances, and the demands of daily life are legitimate excuses.

But they aren’t.
Ever.
Life is chaotic and busy. It seems like too much too often — like you just can’t start or focus or grow in the right direction.

Fear, uncertainty, and self-doubt weigh us down, so we turn – again and again – to “later.” Which becomes “never.”

Enough! Break the cycle with these two insights.

  1. Realize that you are NOT unique. Neither are your problems or circumstances or feelings. Millions and millions of other people have navigated what you’re going through. If they can do it, so can you.
  2. You are personally responsible for where you are now and where you will be in 90 days and for the rest of your life. Stop saying later – and seize the moment to take one little step toward doing what you need to do. Do it right now. And do it again tomorrow. And every day.

Regardless of races being cancelled or happening, Your life, health and dreams cannot be put on hold indefinitely while you wait for the world to get perfect. You will be waiting for ever. Choose to live AS IF the race is happening and reap all the rewards from those efforts.

Life is too short for “later.” Embrace the power of “right freakin’ now!”

Gratitude is good for you

Gratitude is actually good for you

Each holiday season, we stop everything to share one common purpose; To give thanks.

The idea is so central to our national character that its myth goes back before the country’s founding. The concept of gratitude goes back even further, with its roots in ancient philosophy and all the world’s great religions.

But does it all seem like a big pain in the neck sometimes?

I mean, there’s the planning, the shopping, the cooking… This year, everything’s even more complicated because of the pandemic.

If we’re not careful, we can lose the focus on gratitude and instead get bogged down in pressure, negativity and crushed expectations.

You know – the holidays! (Ha ha…)

So, with that in mind, I want to share a super-important idea about being thankful:

It’s good for you. Yep, it’s true. Practicing an “attitude of gratitude” has physical, mental, spiritual and social benefits.

I know life is hard sometimes – this year, maybe more than most.

And that’s partly why being deliberately grateful is so helpful.

When our hearts are flowing with gratitude, there’s not much room left for fear or apprehension.

Grateful people tend to be happier and healthier than their grumpier counterparts.

Saying “thank you” spreads happiness one little bit at a time.
So, this year, amid all the hustle and bustle, be sure to express your gratitude on a regular basis.

I include all the items below every day after my meditation. I light a candle, grab my butter coffee, breathe some essential oils and do the following.

• Write a daily gratitude list.
• Tell someone you appreciate him or her every day – a friend, family member… heck, the mailman! It doesn’t matter.
• Journal, meditate, or engage your spirituality with thankfulness.

Here’s a bonus tip: Do this even when you don’t feel like it.

I promise it will make you feel better – and that’s always something to be thankful about.

Guess what? Spots are still open for my new 16 week Triathlon Training program that includes elements of Holistic Lifestyle practices for amazing results across the finish line! Are you a dreamer or a doer?

Are you a dreamer or a doer?

Do your words match your actions?

I can’t tell you how many times people say they want to get healthy, to exercise regularly, to train for a triathlon, to eat right… and then they literally behave in every way possible that’s the opposite. Partly it’s because of the stories they tell themselves.

• “I’m too busy.”
• “I can’t afford it.”
• “I’m not fit enough to exercise.”
• “People will laugh at me or I don’t know how.”

We usually call these “excuses,” and you can believe them IF YOU WANT TO.
But if you want to be a real doer instead of just a dreamer, then here’s what I suggest:

• Get clear on what you want and how to get it.
• Take the first step, without worrying about the second.
(Call it a “leap of faith.”)
• Feel the fear and work through it anyway.

Ask for help
• Feel the power and the pleasure and the SHEER JOY of growth.

Love yourself enough to do what you say you’re going to do.

I love setting doing a triathlon as the goal and seeing all the amazing healthy side effects that you get as a result.

Without even being aware of it- you come away as a stronger, healthier, sexier, more confident thriving individual that has no limits!

This sneaky thing is making you fat

This sneaky thing is making you fat

You might have heard that stress kills.
Did you know it can also make you fat?
True fact.

When we’re stressed, our bodies release the hormone cortisol. It’s part of the “fight or flight” reaction that served a super-important function in caveman times when our ancestors encountered, say, a saber-tooth tiger.

But it can be deadly in our modern world, leading to adrenal fatigue, sugar cravings, and overeating, – which can cause us to be overweight and want more sugar.
Which causes more stress.

Add the stress of triathlon training and all the sugary sports nutrition and we have a serious problem.

Vicious circle, indeed.

Stress also causes a lot of people to indulge in “comfort foods,” which tend to be high-fat (the wrong fat), high-sodium, and high-sugar.

How many times have you come home from a hard day and cracked open a bag of potato chips or polished off a pizza? It happens.

So, learn to manage your stress by breathing better, training correctly, improving sleep, substitute alcohol for something healthier, and eating a nutrient dense metabolically efficient diet.

Try yoga, meditation, mindfulness, or getting lost in a good book or listening and singing along to music, instead of reaching for the crap.

When you feel your body tensing up, notice it, and deliberately choose to calm down with three deep belly breaths.

Smile, even a fake one. It actually does lead our brains to smiling and meaning it. Similarly, “fake laughing” produces the same stress-fighting physical reaction that “real” laughter does.

It’s true!

If you’ve been doing all the right things and your body isn’t changing, you know where you should be looking – into your ability to manage stress and your training. To learn how to recover better.

Hit reply and let me know if this happens to sound familiar.

Guess what? My holistic lifestyle coaching is included in my new 16 week Triathlon Training program. I’ll teach you all about how to manage the stress of training and life for your ultimate results!

Have you fallen for these myths?

Have you fallen for these myths?

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Never eat after 7 p.m.
Lifting weights makes women bulky.
If you want to lose weight, then you have to do all cardio.
If you want to lose weight, then you have to starve yourself.

All true?

HA! All myths – persistent suckers that have been around for ages.
Let’s have a little fun and break a few of ‘em down.

  1. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Where did this one come from about breakfast being so important? Maybe back in the farming culture of previous centuries? At least then, people needed a lot of fuel to get them through physically demanding mornings. But nowadays, it’s more important to make smart food choices, pay attention to the quality of what you’re eating, and listen to your body than to choke down a big plate of food with the sunrise.
  2. Never eat after 7 p.m.
There’s nothing magic about the clock striking. Some studies suggest eating a lot right before bed can contribute to weight gain. And the intermittent fasting trend calls for a period of abstinence from food, often starting after the evening meal. There’s different research to support every ideology, but at the end of the day, how late you eat doesn’t matter as long as you’re not in caloric excess.
  3. Lifting weights makes women bulky is just crazy talk. If you’ve ever tried to gain muscle mass, then you know it takes a lot of time and effort, plus a great deal of protein, to get “bulky.” Weightlifting helps everyone stay toned and strong, which is good for metabolism, weight control, posture, and the ongoing ability to carry out daily functions. – (check out tomorrow’s email with a guide for strength training).
  4. If you want to lose weight, then you have to do all cardio, all the time.
In fact, resistance training and High-Intensity Interval Training are often more helpful to getting rid of fat and staying strong.
  5. If you want to lose weight, then you have to starve yourself.
You need a caloric deficit, which just means that you’re burning more calories than you’re consuming – which just means you should exercise and eat right. Deprivation diets are frustrating, unrealistic and ineffective for long-term healthy weight management.

Here are few more ridiculous myths.
 Cracking knuckles causes arthritis- Silly
 We need detox drinks and diets to clear our systems; Not True
 Crunches give you abs – NOPE!
 Vegan diets are low-cal and healthy- NOT

We could go on, but you get the point. Don’t believe everything you hear or read. When it comes to sustainable healthy habits, keep it simple and remember that if it sounds too good to be true – or just plain stupid – then it probably is!

Goals Aren’t the Point

Goals Aren’t the Point

We’ve always been told that success is about having a goal and reaching it.
But here’s the deal about goals.

It’s good to have them. And it’s good to pursue them. But merely reaching the goal isn’t really the point.

It’s really about the journey.

It’s the steps we take along the way that matter in the long term. We’ve gotta enjoy the process along the way in order to make lasting change.

Here’s an example:

Let’s say you want to do a triathlon in 8 weeks. You start training over an hour a day as fast and hard as you can.

After 2 weeks you are so sore you can barely move.

The alarm goes off to train again and you hit snooze and then spend a week recovering from over training.

Then you realize you have pushed so hard you are injured and are not even sure you can do the race you registered for.

You feel miserable.

The whole idea of racing makes you feel sick.

You manage to stick with it and cross the finish line, with braces over both knees and a sore shoulder but after the photos are taken, will it have been worth all the torture?

What if, instead, you set the same goal but decided to follow a reasonable plan that would encourage happy, healthy progressive training and appropriate eating habits?

You are able to fit the training into your life and you have more energy and end up losing 10 lbs. as a complete side effect of the plan.

The race gets cancelled but there is another one a few weeks later, and you know you will be even more ready for your ultimate race results.

Could you be happy with that?

Of course! In fact, you would have enjoyed your daily life more, including the establishment of those good habits. You’d have been a better mom, dad, lover, employee and still get to that same goal eventually.

All because most importantly, you’d love your new habits and feel encouraged to continue doing them.

Change is good! Embrace the process in a truly positive way.

If you need some help with this, let me know.

We happen to have a brand new program that is designed with the above in mind! Beginner to advanced athletes welcome.

Stop This Now

Stop This Now

As children, we are happy to take credit when things go our way – and to deflect blame when they don’t.

“Yes, I did clean up my room – but it’s sister’s fault that it’s a mess again!”

But as we grow up, we learn to take responsibility for ourselves – for our words and actions, good or bad, and the consequences they bring.

It’s how we become well, responsible adults.
But it’s also how we liberate ourselves to achieve our full potential.

That’s right. If you’re feeling held back and unhappy about something, maybe it’s because you’re reluctant to claim your role in it.

This isn’t about blaming. Or pretending we have control over everything that happens.

It’s about acknowledging that we are responsible for what we do and for how we react to other people, things and events.

For example, which sounds more responsible and leads to a good result?

A) “I wanted to train yesterday, but the stupid gym was closed, my bike had a flat, I forgot to set my alarm, I drank some beers and now I have a hangover.”

B) “So I practiced yoga, used my weights at home, got on the bike trainer or went for a run, instead.”

We can choose to control ourselves.

We can choose to observe our reactions and improve them.

We can choose to stop pointing fingers at everyone else and stop playing the victim.

Successful, happy people create their own destinies by accepting what they can’t change (other people, places, and things) and taking responsibility for what they can (their own thoughts, words and actions).

Once we acknowledge that and really embrace it – We on our way to breaking away from fear and happily pursuing our goals.

What’s your next GOAL?
