“This has been a great year” Rockstar Triathlete: Enrique Raphael

Rockstar Triathlete: Enrique Raphael

Coach’s Notes:

Enrique’s journey has been truly inspirational!

Definitely not a straight shot to the top, with a hamstring injury and a twisted ankle, he now knows how to listen to his body and train in a way that allows him to keep improving race after race. Losing 20 lb’s is also an added bonus!

From his first time on the podium in short course racing last year, his success at Ultimate Tri Camp in March and now his very first 70.3.

Although the swim was cancelled he delivered exactly as was expected for the bike and run, averaging 21 MPH for the 56 bike and 10 min/ miles for the 13.1.

Congratulations Enrique… let’s get the sub 6 hour 70.3 in the books this year. You are a Rockstar Triathlete!

Age:

I will be 59 this year

Profession:

Engineer

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?

I met Erinne few years ago and I did the Swim Essentials and it was a good experience, then last year I decided to take triathlon more seriously registering for the NYC triathlon and I contacted her again; we went over the six month Triathlon Transformation Program and I became part of the FCC Tribe!

It has been an incredible year and I culminated it with the 70.3 Gulf Coast this past weekend.

What is your “A” race for this season?

My “A” race was the 70.3 this past weekend; now I have to think about the next one; probably another 70.3 this year.

Please share your BIG goals:

After racing in Panama City, I am sure I can complete a 70.3 in less than 6 hours if I keep working and improving my technique and fitness; this is a sport of consistency and continuous learning!

Tell me about your successes so far:

This has been a great year; I was able to go from completing a Sprint Race back in May 2021 to the 70.3 last weekend.

Beyond the races I can say the major success is that I feel great, I am healthy and I am blessed with the life I have and the people I share it with.

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for each of the following? Swim, Bike, Run, and Nutrition/Health. Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved:

Now I feel very confident swimming long distances in open water, I believe I am stronger on the bike, I have improved my running technique a lot and I have made some changes to my nutrition and my lifestyle because of all that I have learned through the year.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:

  1. Being part of a team makes a big difference; besides all what we get from the coaches, everybody in the team adds value to your training with comments, recommendations, etc.
  2. Following a well designed program based on your capabilities and measuring your progress is key in improving your performance
  3. What we learn beyond the training: Nutrition, sleep, meditation, yoga, etc.; all are game changers!

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?

It is always something to learn, it is always a new challenge, It is always competing against yourself to be better, and despite being a one person sport, you are always surrounded and sharing with excellent people with the same kind of mentality and objectives.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?

If you are committed to improving your health, your lifestyle and you are competitive, you are in the right place to join a great group of people thriving for the same.

I’m shocked at how I feel in the water: Swim Testimonial, Frantz Dunel

I’m shocked at how I feel in the water: Swim Testimonial, Frantz Dunel

Coach’s Notes:
Frantz has come a very long way in the swim. Already a very strong runner, we started training for a sprint triathlon.

The swim was definitely his limiter. Being so strong, it can sometimes be difficult to learn that in the swim its all about being SMOOTH, and not pushing hard. After joining my Swim Essentials program and learning the step by step progression of learning how to swim freestyle for triathlon, Frantz has learned how to glide and relax more in the water so he can save energy to then be able to bike and run strong.

Congratulations Frantz, you are officially a SWIMMER!

Why did you want to learn to swim?
1) Well I never knew that I didn’t know how to swim SWIM until FC asked me to swim a few laps in the pool. Jumping off a boat and waddling around for a few minutes or a few strokes to the edge of the pool is not real swimming is what I realized. I wanted to learn the proper technique to further challenge myself, be able to compete in triathlons and to continue being as well rounded as possible for my kids. We live in Miami, we are always traveling to beach destinations or in a pool. Swimming is critical.

What was the hardest part in the process?
2) The hardest part was overcoming the mindset that it was impossible for me to become a swimmer because I had not been doing it for 10+ years like the rest of the group or swimmers at the pool. Swimming I have found to be one of the most challenging sports because it is extremely technical. I found and still find it difficult to put all the pieces together in order to swim “effortlessly”…balance, proper pull, full rotation on the side for breathing, long reach, straight legs and kicking from the hips etc etc.

How does it feel different in the water vs 6 months ago?
3) I am proud and somewhat shocked at how I feel in the water today vs 6 months ago. Aside from the exhausting swim workouts, I genuinely look forward to getting in the water as I feel much more comfortable and confident. As I swim my laps I can hear Coach Erinne in my head and I use that to correct my form, slow down and try and glide vs a frantic gasping for my next breath.

I look forward to moving up to the Olympic distance in May!

Interview with a Rockstar Triathlete: Urs Brunner

Rockstar Triathlete; Urs Brunner

Coaches Notes: So very proud of Urs for his dedication to triathlon training remotely with Full Circle. It’s not easy staying motivated training on your own. If it’s important to you and you lean into the support we provide, you get what you need!

His successes over the past 6 months, prove that even though he is not a local Miami triathlete, the training plan, weekly coach calls, and support from the Full Circle Tribe can all be felt and big dreams can be realized.

Working together through an injury with modified training plans and strength exercises and shoe changes you were able to become the fittest strongest version of yourself to cross the finish line in your very 1st 70.3 Augusta.

Your race photos are amazing; you can see the smile and feel the joy and energy despite the heat with a race delay.

Way to show up for yourself, proving age is just a number and you can get faster with the right program and support!

Whoop Whoop! Can’t wait to see what’s next on your Triathlon Journey and thanks so much for letting Full Circle Coaching be your guide!

WATCH OUR LIVE INTERVIEW; Urs Brunner Journey to Augusta 70.3, 2021:
https://youtu.be/Owc-5KcPIQA

Age: Just turned 60 years old.
Profession: Executive Coach and Consultant

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey? I love the body, mind and soul approach and I love the tribe feeling. There is also great energy being a part of Full Circle and the coaches are fantastic, even for a remote athlete, like myself.

What is your “A” race for this season? My “A” race was the Ironman 70.3 in Augusta. I have never done an IM distance and I wanted to challenge myself as I turned 60.

Please share your BIG goals: First of all, I really wanted to be called an Ironman. The idea of doing such a long race was daunting and I knew it would require a lot of dedication. In February of this year, I made the decision that when I turned 60 in September, I would complete my first IM, so I signed up for Augusta for the September 26, 2021 race.

Tell me about your successes so far: I have been in and out of triathlon over the past 20 years. My biggest success probably is my overall fitness. I am faster at 60 than I was at 40. Just this year, I ran my PB for the half marathon and my 1-mile test never has been faster. I would also say that one of my big successes is my overall mental and physical health which I attribute to the structured training program and all the support from the coaching staff.

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for each of the following? Swim: Bike: Run: Nutrition/Health: Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved

SWIM – I am particularly proud of my ability to swim non-stop for the full IM 70.3 distance and I gradually increased my 800 and 400 test times.

BIKE – I invested in a aero triathlon bike and that increased my speed. I am now able to bike faster, at higher cadence with lower heart rate.

RUN – the run has always been my challenge but with the strength and interval training, I am now able to run off the bike much more comfortably and sustain a good run pace for a longer duration.

Nutrition – especially race nutrition was a big focus leading up to my IM 70.3. The guidance from the coaches was invaluable and I made a lot of adjustments, especially on the bike portion.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey

1. The support and encouragement from the FC tribe and my family really had a great impact on me. They helped me through the training phase and especially during the actual race.

2. I had to overcome an achilles injury that limited my running early in my training. After physical therapy, running shoe changes and specific exercises from the coaches, I slowly recovered and I am now pain free.

3. I have committed my time to the training. Especially leading up to the “A” race, the training hours increased and I made a commitment that I would give it my full attention. This included time dedication and also lifestyle choices such as no more happy hour drinks!

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon? I love the variety and technicality of this sport. Also, it is a sport that requires a degree of dedication and commitment and that fits my personality really well. Finally, this sport is challenging and I love that aspect. Achieving my daily training goals or race goals, gives me the motivation to stay active!

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?

Just do it! Face your fears and be bold. At the beginning, it might seem scary to think of swim, bike and run all in one race. But you start slow and you build up. The structured program at Full Circle Coaching will guide you along your path and support you all the way.

Rockstar Triathlete: Enrique Raphael

Coach’s Notes: I was so excited when Enrique reached out to me and committed 100% to the Triathlon Transformation program just 4 months ago.

His results speak for themselves.

A long time triathlete but not really doing the things necessary to reach the big goals. We got right to work with all of his evaluations, testing and nutrition protocol and you can read from his results it’s working.

The fittest, healthiest he has ever been and then getting on the podium as a sweet side note made all the effort worth it!.

So proud of all your successes thus far Enrique and the journey has just begun! Congratulations on being an example that anything is possible- Let’s do this!!!

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey? Despite having practiced sports most of my life, I felt I had been in a plateau for a long time training by myself and I wanted to take my training to a higher level.  Since I met Erinne in the past and I knew what her athletes were accomplishing by following FCC I called her and I committed to work on her transformational program.

What is your “A” race for this season? The reason I started this process was because I registered to the the lottery of the NYC Triathlon, so it was my “A” race at that point, nevertheless after three and a half months now my next big challenge is 70.3 Gulf Coast May 2022!

Please share your BIG goals: Besides Gulf Coast, I am planning to do other races, including the Miami Half Marathon in February.  The other one is to do again a race I did 8 years ago for my 50 running in Patagonia 100km in three days in December 2022.

Tell me about your successes so far: If you measure success in terms of races results, I have been improving my PR through the year in the three sprints I already did and I completed the Olympic distance in NY; I you measure it in the way I feel the success is bigger, I feel much more confident to practice the three disciplines, to race and to take challenges in my preparation; In summary I am really enjoying the process!

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for the each of the following? Swim: Bike: Run: Nutrition/Health: Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved: I do not remember the exact numbers, but I have been dropping my time in all the disciplines through the different tests we have done. In the races I went from 1:24 in May to 1:13 last weekend.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:
1. Swimming technique and weekly open water practice
2. Bike adjustments and different drills (the bridges with coach Domingos helped a lot)!!!
3.Running technique and track workout

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon? 1-The fact that there are three disciplines; it makes it more challenging but it is more fun too.

2- Team training – it makes all the difference having a group with same objectives working with you every day.

3- Coaches. Having the guidance and the support is a game changer.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program? I would recommend it 200% – It is a lot of fun, it is something that will help people in any activity because it creates a lot of good habits: Discipline, commitment, self-motivation, healthier life, teamwork and perseverance among others. It makes you feel proud of yourself.

Important Bike Rules

Important Bike Rules

It’s race weekend again and Integrity Multisport asked me to share important cycling rules for the race.

These rules are in place to keep everyone safe on the bike course. And also make sure everyone is following the rules!

#1 You must ride on the right hand side of the road at all times unless you are passing the cyclist in front of you.

In that case, you would say “On Your Left” kindly to let them know you are passing.

You have 15 seconds to pass, which is plenty of time. And then you move back to the right hand side of the road. And continue on your way.

The cyclist being passed is not allowed to draft the cyclist who passed them or accelerate.

They must wait until they are out of the draft zone to stay where they are or pass back safely using the same rules.

Never Pass On The Right!!

#2 – Drafting is Illegal!

Drafting is riding within 3 bike lengths of the cyclist in front of you.  If you come up behind a cyclist you must pass or drop back 3 bike lengths to stay within the rules of the race.

The reason drafting is illegal is because it gives the cyclist drafting behind another cyclist less resistance so they can ride faster while wasting less energy.

So it is definitely an unfair advantage if you draft.

So let’s all follow the rules and stay safe during the race.

If you have more questions about the race please attend the Pre Race Clinic on Saturday at @MackCycle and a fitness at 1 pm.

Have an amazing race!!

Rockstar Triathlete Brian Dubow

Rockstar Triathlete Brian Dubow

Coach’s Notes: Brian came to me with a dream to accomplish an Ironman in six months. Although he did have some running experience, I know that is not enough to get through an ironman.

Six months is a pretty short amount of time to get an athlete there, but I knew my new Triathlon Transformation was the perfect solution.

I prefer to take a newbie through a 2 year process of Sprints and Olympic distance races for the first year, and then 70.3 and full IM distance races for the 2nd year. This approach can be easier on the body and mind.
But when someone comes to me with the “Dream,” I get to live my purpose of guiding them through the journey to success.

Brian’s open mindedness and willingness to show up and learn, definitely expedited the process.

There were BIG learning curves to overcome in all three sports. But I know my process works if you are open and coachable.

His success from month to month was awesome to witness. He showed up to learn from everyone on the team and that’s the benefit of the Full Circle Tribe; the support is SOOOOO much of the process and being willing to ask for help when you need it.

Brian’s attitude was infectious, and the success kept happening. The first month was all about safety and learning the basics and improving skills, then testing and training smart, following the prescribed progression.

After Ultimate Tri Camp, I can say Brian was officially a triathlete at heart and completing Haines City 70.3, with a smile on his face, I knew we were on track.

The next few months were tough, but he trusted the process and I can say I am so proud of you Brian. Thanks so much for putting your faith in FC. Together we achieved the “Dream” and I know that for you there is no limit…

You are the “Ultimate FC Rockstar!!!” We will miss you dearly. Let’s not say goodbye, just see you soon!

Age: 27

Profession: MBA Candidate at UCLA Anderson

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey? I signed up for an Ironman with minimal experience in swimming and biking. I needed a coach and team that would help me transform into a triathlete in time for my race (six months out). After meeting with Erinne for a brief informational session, I loved her energy and knew she was the coach for me!

What is your “A” race for this season? Ironman Lake Placid

Please share your BIG goals: My BIG goal was to become an Ironman. At the time, I didn’t realize that the six months of training that went into becoming one was the real race, with the Ironman itself being a celebration which enabled me to officially call myself an Ironman and proudly rep the gear. Looking back now, thanks to the training I endured through FCC, the moment I toed the start line in Lake Placid, I was already an Ironman mentally which allowed me to accomplish my Big goal physically.

As a goal oriented person, my next immediate BIG goals have to do with continuing to build my brand (Hit of Happiness), bringing my best self to business school every day, maintaining a healthy/organic diet and staying fit enough to easily ramp up for a marathon.

In the long run, I do want to continue to test my endurance and my limits (or lack thereof). I definitely have a 100-mile ultramarathon on my bucket list.

Tell me about your successes so far: Success is super relative. When I first started training with FCC, making it over the Key Biscayne bridge in one piece felt like a huge accomplishment. Then my first long ride down South with the team was a major milestone. Since then, I completed the Haines City half-Ironman and the Lake Placid Ironman. The real success was showing up to practice day after day after day and growing to love the training and lifestyle.

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for the each of the following? Swim: Bike: Run: Nutrition/Health: Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved:

Swim: I had no form. I might as well have been a fish out of water. My 400m time improved by a minute and a half over my time at FCC and I went from fearing the water to someone who will continue to swim as a form of cross training for the foreseeable future.

Bike: I wasn’t comfortable reaching down for my water bottle while riding when I joined FCC. I could barely even clip in. To be able to bike 112 miles on a hilly course like Lake Placid six months later says it all.

Run: Erinne taught me a ton about running form. Even though I was a marathon runner prior to joining FCC, I now have a much more efficient stride and improved my all-out mile time by 20+ seconds.

Nutrition/health: Transitioning back to a social school environment, I am definitely struggling to give up my Ironman training diet/lifestyle. Erinne taught me to eat a much more natural and nutritious diet while also maximizing sleep and minimizing alcohol. I am now far more intentional in what I put into my body and more aware of how different foods make me feel.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:
1. The team. The FCC team is an amazing group of humans! They each took time to help me along my journey and provided a ton of accountability and inspiration along the way. I am very grateful for the relationships I have developed. Being a part of this community undoubtedly helped me believe in myself and reach my potential in my A race.

2. The coaches. Erinne and Jac are incredible! They know exactly what they are doing and they tailored my training plan to accommodate my lifestyle. Trust the process, and the results will come.

3. The structure. Having practice in person five days a week was huge for my progress. Every time I went to practice, I pushed myself harder then I would have if by myself, while also improving my form and technique.

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?Everyone is on a journey. I love hearing people’s stories and being a part of something that for most is about more than completing a triathlon. The community aspect, the internal growth and the self actualization all resonate with me.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program? Just do it! While you may be considering it for physical reasons, you will quickly learn that this is also a spiritual and intellectual journey. With the support of the team and coaches, you can absolutely accomplish your goals, whatever they may be! The only thing standing in the way of you and your triathlon dreams is taking that first step.

Feel free to reach out to me (brian@hitofhappiness.com) if you have any other questions about my journey and make sure to read my Ironman recap below! Ironman Recap (hitofhappiness.com

Free Your Mind — And Results Will Follow

Free Your Mind — And Results Will Follow

I talk to people all the time who want to get in better shape, lose weight, or embrace a healthier lifestyle, want to do a triathlon, or get faster at racing.

And it’s amazing how often they follow up their desire with a list of reasons why they can’t possibly succeed.

  • “I’m just big boned, so there’s nothing I can do.”
  • “I was terrible in gym class, so I know I’d just fail again.”
  • “Everyone in my family is heavy, so I just have to accept myself like this.”
  • I’m so slow, I’ll never be able to get fast”
  • I’m too old, it’s too late”

It goes on and on, and it’s natural, to a degree. BUT IT DRIVES ME CRAZY! Because I know what nonsense it is.

These are all examples of self-limiting beliefs that too many of us have.

They hold us back and keep us stuck. And the only way to break through is to investigate these beliefs, ask where they came from, and then see how you can challenge them.

Ask yourself “Is it really true?”

Do what you want to do, not what these lies keep telling you about yourself.

One example: Let’s say that your parents and siblings really are overweight. That means nothing about you. Maybe they also overeat and never exercise. Maybe they don’t want to change their lives.

But if you do, you’ve got to identify the chains around your brain, take them apart, and embrace the reality that you got this!

You really do.

And if you know you can’t do it on your own, I’m here to help. Hit reply and let me know what’s coming up for you.

I’ve opened up a few spots in my signature “TRIATHLON TRANSFORMATION” Program. ARE YOU IN?

It’s O.K. to be Afraid

It’s O.K. to be Afraid

Of all the emotions I’ve felt throughout my life, one I really regret is fear. Well, no. I don’t regret feeling fear, necessarily. Fear can be helpful in certain situations – like when danger occurs and triggers your “flight or fight” mechanism.

So, I should say that I regret those times when I let fear (of the unknown) stop me from taking powerful action.

Here are some hypothetical examples of what I’m talking about.

  • Maybe you had a job offer that seemed enticing, but some risky element kept you in an unfulfilling (but safe) situation.
  • Have you stayed in a lifeless relationship because you were afraid you’d never find another companion?
  • Have you ever wanted to do a triathlon or Ironman but were too afraid of how it might feel learning a new skill you may not be great at yet?

I used to make those decisions too often. And then I looked closer and found that sometimes my fear had actually been just anxiety or uncertainty. And I looked at friends who had succeeded despite their similar worries.

You know, courage isn’t the absence of fear; it’s acknowledging the fear and doing the right thing anyway.

So, what are you afraid of that’s holding you back?

  • Make a rational decision based on probable outcomes.
  • Ask what’s the worst that can happen, and if you’d be OK with it.
  • Fully imagine what success will look like, taste like, sound like, and feel like.

Accept the fear or dismantle it – but BELIEVE IN YOURSELF, and there’s nothing you can’t do.

The Secret Strategy for Getting Results

The Secret Strategy for Getting Results

How many times were you told as child to wait for what you wanted?

It seemed like you heard that for everything.

  • “You can watch TV after you do your homework.”
  • “No dessert till you’ve eaten your vegetables.”
  • “Santa won’t be back for a year — really.”

It’s just part of being a kid.

And part of becoming an adult is grasping the concept of delayed gratification.

That was the impetus behind a famous study of children known as the Marshmallow Test. Researchers tested young kids to see if they would prefer to have one marshmallow now or try to wait for two in 15 minutes. Years later, they checked back in with the kids and found those who’d been able to wait had greater signs of success in life, like better SAT scores and better jobs.

It’s a helpful thought we can apply to our health and fitness goals. Day in and day out, week after week, it can get frustrating when we don’t see the results we want. It’s easy to, say, grab the bag of cookies in order to FEEL BETTER NOW — even if we know we’re just making things more difficult for ourselves.

  • Try to focus less on the outcomes (a certain speed or weight) and more on the process.
  • Resist comparing yourself to others; you have no idea what they deal with or what they are doing.
  • Realize that time will pass anyway, so you might as well take the actions that will bring your desired results as it does.

Being an adult isn’t so bad, is it? We get to remind ourselves that our choices have consequences – and that our parents were right about that whole “be patient” thing.

And remember, when you’re giving into delayed gratification, you’re giving up the thing you really want – a healthy, fit body and the longest life possible.

Time to Recharge

I’m in Aspen Colorado with some great friends enjoying a change of scenery.

The views, mountains and cool dry air are pretty much the exact opposite of my Miami environment.

It is so nice to just get away from the day to day routine and spend quality time with friends and family, eating great food and laughing.

The mountains make for a completely different kind of exercise. At this altitude everything is a little bit harder on my sea level lungs but, the scenery makes it so enjoyable. Breathing the cool dry air and taking in the size of the mountains is breathtaking in a good way!

But yet, even with all this I am struggling to truly let go, thinking of all the things I should be doing.

As a small business owner, it’s difficult to completely let go of the day to day in my company and wondering if if I’m doing enough in every moment and trusting those I left in charge that everything will be just fine.

It’s a hard ask of myself on a daily basis to let go and trust that everything will be ok!

But I’m practicing, just like I practice for triathlon training – for me the commitment to train or rest is not a problem. I can find the balance and my passion is helping others to find that balance too.

I’m wondering if you can relate to this struggle…

Please reply if you feel inspired, oh and I hope you’re planning some down time with friends and family too this summer!
