Rockstar Triathlete: Rachel Mumford

Rockstar Triathlete: Rachel Mumford

Coach’s Notes:

Congratulations Rachel!

Over the summer I really noticed Rachel with a new sense of purpose and hitting her workouts in a committed way! It would only make sense she would end up on the podium at her summer Olympic distance race a few weeks ago.

Digging into her swim by attending Swim Essentials really helped identify some limiters in her technique and get to work on correcting them. But the key as always was the consistency in her training week after week!!

Way to go Rachel! Age Group Nationals 2023, here you come!!!!

You are a Rockstar Triathlete!!!

Age:

54

Profession:

Director of Payroll & Benefits Accounting

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?

-Wanted to be part of a team with other triathletes.
-Wanted a Coach whose main priority was triathlons and not just a side hustle
-where coaching is available every day.
-I believed that FCC could finally help me improve my swim.
-Also, I chose Full Circle Coaching because I knew that the team focused on more than just racing but also total mind and body, a holistic approach.

What is your “A” race for this season?

Originally Heartland Triathlon on June 5, 2022 but I had nutrition mishaps so now my “A” race is Miami Man International Distance in November 2022

Please share your BIG goals:

Qualify for Age Group Nationals

My perfect Olympic race goal is:

1500 Swim 00:41:01

40k Bike 1:11:00

10k Run 00:57:29

Tell me about your successes so far:

Swimming has been my biggest challenge. My swim threshold is 2:32 pace. At Key Biscayne Triathlon I swam a 2:27 pace in OPEN WATER! I would definitely credit the Swim Essentials class and the specific drills I received from my video analysis for improving my swim.

Training with a Bike power meter is a game changer. When I’m focused on the high cadence and my desired watts, I’m hitting speeds that I didn’t think were in my ballpark. Now I just need to bring all the components together such as distance, endurance, nutrition, etc. Eventually it will happen at a race.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:

1. Daily coaching either at practice or online through Training Peaks helps me stay on target and helps prevent me from getting injured especially with the recovery weeks.

  1. Nutrition, nutrition, nutrition!

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?

Triathlon has been part of my lifestyle for over 10 years. I began with FCC in 2018. Being part of a team brings excitement. My teammates encourage me.

My teammates are always signing up for something that I may or may not have thought of racing. They come back share their experience next thing you know I’m signing up for the race.

A prime example is, Key West Triathlon it is such a fun time. I have now done it several times.

Also, I had not planned on racing the Olympic distance at Key Biscayne until a couple of teammates encouraged me to sign up for this distance and it was that race I had one of my best swim times and got on the podium!

Even when I miss my goal I know that the next race will be better so I keep training.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?

Join FCC, it is an investment in you.

Use setbacks to strengthen your commitment

Use setbacks to strengthen your commitment

Life is hard sometimes.

You have so many responsibilities and so little time. Even when you stick to a schedule, circumstances can disrupt your plans and leave you scrambling. It’s enough to make you want to give up when everything seems to be working against you.

But don’t – please!

It happens to everyone. After all, there’s only so much we can control – and a whole universe of people, places and things that are simply beyond us. When you learn to EXPECT disruption, and to simply accept it as a fact of life, then you can begin to be free of it, and keep moving forward.

Here’s a super-basic example. If you leave 20 minutes ahead of time for any appointment. That would allow for traffic or another unexpected delay. If you arrived on time, you’d have a few minutes to kill; if the journey took longer than expected, you would still be on time.

I think about this little lesson all the time. It’s even easy to apply it to healthy goals.

For example, if you want to lose weight, then it’s not enough to start eating right. You also have to anticipate days when you won’t be able to, for whatever reason. Maybe you’re stuck in a work conference, or traveling, or just can’t resist your neighbor’s fried chicken today.

If you want to train for a triathlon then you have to accept that you’ll need rest days/ weeks, or adjustments to your training schedule. There might be bad weather. That you might have a family emergency that keeps you from completing your training.

Here’s my wish for you. When these circumstances happen – and they will – don’t abandon your goals.

Instead, remember that success takes consistent effort over time. And use each setback to strengthen the commitment you made to yourself.

It’s all in how you look at it!

Hopping Drills for Running

Hopping Drills for Running

Finding your Spring; One great way to get faster and stronger for running is doing hopping drills.

These types of plyometrics increase strength and stability in your muscles and ligaments and find the spring in your step!

The goal is have quick light feet, with a very quick rebound off the ground which will transfer to your foot strike on the run.

Start with proper running form and posture first and start hopping with two feet. Think of your legs like carbon fiber springs- strong but supple!

Advance to the single leg hops with control. This increases your ability to balance on one leg and helps you learn to have less contact time on the ground. Running is all about being able to balance while moving on one leg to another… add these drills and see and feel how your technique and speed improve on the run.

If you’re struggling to hop on one leg, I suggest balancing with one leg first until you can maintain your balance without falling over, then move to double leg hops and finally single leg hops.

Also choosing a soft surface and natural running shoes or even barefoot can greatly improve your foot strength!

Happy hopping!

Some of your thoughts are not based in reality

Some of your thoughts are not based in reality

Here’s a shocker: Not all your thoughts are based in reality.

Yep, it’s true.

Like that thought you have about not being good enough. (This is one of my limiting core beliefs.)

Or the one about how you’ll never reach your goal race time.

Or how you just don’t have the right mindset to reach your business goal or lose the weight you want.

See what I mean, now?

THESE. THOUGHTS. ARE. NOT. REAL!

They’re the nonsense lies you unintentionally tell yourself that keep holding you back.

Here’s the good news: You don’t have to keep listening to them. In fact, you can start to shut them down today.

Tell yourself – RIGHT NOW – that you ARE good enough… that you DO deserve health and success and love… that you ARE smart enough and creative enough to get where you want to go.

Say it as many times as you need. Write it in your journal every day if that helps.

Make a list of all your accomplishments- and there are many- to remind yourself that these negative thoughts are simply not true. Keep it handy to refer to when these thoughts creep in.

And every time that annoying voice breaks through again with one of your limiting self-beliefs, step up and defend yourself by repeating your positive affirmation.

You can overcome a loud, persistent lie with steady, loving TRUTH supported by action.

We’re all programmed with these kinds of hurtful self-messages. But that doesn’t mean we have to accept them as truth.

The Time is…

The Time is…

If you’re looking for a sign, THIS IS IT.

  • This is the sign you’ve been waiting for.
  • This is the sign to take action you’ve been delaying.
  • This is the sign that “I’m waiting for a better time” is nothing but a lie we all tell ourselves.

So, I’m sorry (not sorry), to end the story of “I’m waiting for a better day.” There is no better day. Today is it!

You just got THE SIGN, after all…

Start right now. Take one step in the direction you want, even if you feel unconfident or anxious. Do one thing to begin reaching your goals. One action leads to another and another…

It doesn’t matter what those goals are. Maybe you want to do an ironman or a sprint triathlon, get in better physical shape, start eating right, improve a relationship, or save more money.

The point is that all of these things involve a commitment of DOING – and a commitment of doing, again and again OVER TIME.

Time doesn’t start when you want it to, or when it’s convenient for you, or when everything in your life lines up in a perfect row. That’s what we call a fantasy.

The reality of living YOUR life on YOUR terms? That starts with action. RIGHT NOW.

If your best Triathlon is one of those things you are deciding to take on now, Please join me for my upcoming Free 5 Day Facebook Challenge . I’ll be addressing the 5 things you struggle with in training for Triathlon based on my latest survey.

Time Management
Overcoming and preventing Injury
How to get faster
What to eat, and when to eat it
How to deal with fears, anxiety and overwhelm and of course how to get started!

Coach’s Notes:
Paul has accomplished more in the last 6 months than many aim for in a year.  His dedication to learn the skills needed to swim, bike, run and eat better and balance it all with his family and work life is to be admired.  A personal record at every single triathlon to date is awesome, but the smile and laughter he brings to the group is an added bonus.  So happy you joined the Full Circle Tribe, can’t wait to see what amazing things you accomplish next! – Coach Erinne

Age: 45

Profession:

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?
For the last 20 years, I have been participating in various distance races including marathons, the craziest challenge being Disney’s Dopey Challenge which I completed twice! I needed a new challenge so I started biking which I enjoyed and a friend convinced me to sign up for the South Beach Tri — I knew I needed help because I couldn’t swim so I found Erinne / Full Circle at the Riviera Master’s swim class and the Erinne said “Hey, why don’t you come run & bike with us this week” and the rest is history. By the end of the year I will have completed 7 triathlons and hopefully many more in the years to come.

What is your “A” race for this season?
I’m excited about the Miami Man Tri coming up in November, the weather will be perfect and I really want to end the year with a fantastic result.

Please share your BIG goals:
I really enjoy the challenge of the shorter triathlon, however, my goal is to complete a 70.3 in 2019 and a 140.6 in 2020.

Tell me about your successes so far:
My biggest success is that I can actually swim freestyle. It doesn’t seem like a big deal to most, however, from not swimming to completing and competing in triathlons is a huge achievement for me. My swim time for a sprint distance has improved 3.5 minutes since I started with FC. In addition to the improvements in the water, my overall finishing time has improved by more than 6 minutes in a relatively short race. There’s always an opportunity to be better and that’s what I get when training with FC.

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for the each of the following? Swim: Bike: Run: Nutrition/Health: Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved:
The whole program has been a success for me; my swim time has improved every time. My running has changed dramatically and with some fantastic coaching, I have worked on cadence, form and the results are that I can run faster. On the bike, Coach Dennis is relentless in his pursuit of making each one of his cyclists stronger, my bike times & speeds are through the roof. I’m most proud my gains in the water; 6 minutes in a short distance race is amazing.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:
1. FC is not just swim, bike and run coaching, it is a tribe of passionate people who strive to be better than the day before. The entire tribe helps and coaches together making it a really fun experience while working really hard.
2. Erinne’s holistic approach when working with athletes is unique and has really helped me; Erinne includes Nutrition, Lifestyle, Rehabilitation, Physio and Stretching techniques throughout the training which keeps me injury free and always finding ways to improve my race times.
3. The group chat is a forum in which Erinne’s athletes can ask questions and get advise around the clock. Even for people with a busy travel profession (like me), you can ask questions about the workout and you will get answers instantly. This forum helps motivate me to do better and pushes to me to train even when I’m not in Miami.

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?
Triathlons are the ultimate endurance challenge working every part of your body. Bringing together my 3 favorite sports into a single race event is perfect for me and makes me wake up every morning ready to train hard.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?
You have to Tri it! The training is never boring and even if you don’t commit for the long term, you can’t get a better group of coaches that personalize a training program for you. They are truly experts in their respective domains and practice what they preach.

5 Ways to Get Unstuck! #2

5 Ways to Get Unstuck!

Ever feel like you’re giving your best effort and just not getting the results you want in any area of life?

Or maybe you feel like you just don’t have the motivation and drive right now to transform your body and your life.

If you’re feeling stuck, I’m here to help.

So, here are my top 5 ways you can get un-stuck:

  1. Focus on the next right move. If you focus on the big picture, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. But by simply directing yourself to make the RIGHT decision (the one that brings you closer to your goal) in each moment will add up to big results that keep you motivated.
  2. Devise a reward strategy. If you make the changes you desire and reach your goals, how will you reward yourself (not with food!)? It could be something as big as a vacation or as small as a massage.
  3. Be real about the consequences of not changing. What are the bad things that will happen if you don’t achieve your goal? Let that sink in and drive you.
  4. Make “DO IT ANYWAY” your motto. When you’re ready to talk yourself out of exercising or cooking dinner, LIVE this motto. So often we get lost rationalizing poor choices in our heads. We have to do this to make accepting less than our best easier. Be aware of it and choose differently.
  5. Increase your accountability. A good way of doing this is to ask a friend to join you. A GREAT way to do this is to hire a coach who believes in you but NOT your excuses.

So, which of these resonates most with you? Any you haven’t attempted before?

And don’t forget – if you need help getting un-stuck, we’ve got your back here at FULL CIRCLE COACHING. Just let me know you’re ready text me at the number below. I’ll reach out to you and start the conversation right away.

Yours in Health,

5 Strategies for a guilt-free, waistline-friendly Thanksgiving

5 Strategies for a guilt-free, waistline-friendly Thanksgiving

Ah – the most wonderful time of the year is beginning! From Thanksgiving to Christmas the average person gains 7-10 pounds. We KNOW this, but we do it anyway. Most people do absolutely nothing to stop it. So why is this?

We tend to use special occasions as an excuse not just to overindulge but to binge. It’s your birthday (or the day after or the week of)? Cake for breakfast becomes perfectly reasonable. Halloween? A dozen mini chocolates? Totally acceptable (they’re mini after all, right?)!

The problem with this season is that there isn’t just one special occasion here and there. Between the DAY of the holiday itself, the numerous parties, work functions, and so on, many days become a special occasion where we apply the “anything goes rule.” What I’m sharing below are the tools I personally use to enjoy a guilt-free, waistline-friendly and healthy holiday season…

1 Approach Thanksgiving with an abundance mindset – this applies to any holiday really. The
truth is, there is nothing truly special about holiday meals aside from the people we share them with. We live in a first world country where the foods we want are at our fingertips 365 days per year. So, in reality, you could have Thanksgiving in part or in whole at any time. When you approach food with an abundance mindset, it’s a lot easier to practice holiday levels of moderation.

2 Expect, accept, and embrace over-indulgence
It would be completely unreasonable for me to sit and lecture you on not over-indulging. Especially because I’ll likely be doing it myself! A key for me is being OK with it, not wracking myself with guilt because I knew it was coming! Heck…I plan on it – not to the extreme, but I’m not going to practice my normal rule of eating to 80% full. The damage stress does and the way it affects hormonal balance (and ultimately how much body fat we have) is far worse than having one big meal – so go enjoy it!

3 Fill your plate with protein and veggies first,
then add tastes of all the other goodies – I’m totally o.k. with you overdoing these two food groups (see point above). But when you strategically fill your plate with the better stuff, you’re obviously going to be better off. Even a plate of broccoli isn’t good for you when you’re in caloric excess, BUT it’s going to take you much longer and with much more food to reach that point when you maintain focus on protein and veggies with smaller tastes of starchy carb rich dishes and desserts.

4 Plan to move
whether you go for a hike with your family, get a hard strength workout, or simply take a 20 minute walk, vow to do something to get your body moving before or after the big meal! You’ll feel much better all day for it!

5 Splurge only once
A holiday is only one DAY…not an entire season, so this bit of advice is two-fold. Plan to splurge only on the actual DAY of the holiday (or whichever day you celebrate) and only once during that day. No need for a full breakfast, Thanksgiving meal, then another full plate of leftovers that evening. Sure, it tastes good, but you’ll feel completely miserable and be working to undo the damage for weeks to come!

So, there you have my top 5 Thanksgiving (or holiday in general) strategies! I promise if you apply these, you’ll be a lot less likely to end up in the category of people who gain weight over the holidays!

Coach Erinne Guthrie

This Is Your Warning

This Is Your Warning

We all get this one opportunity to live our very best life.

When we don’t grow, love, take care of ourselves, and live to our potential, we are squandering this one amazing opportunity we’ve been granted.

Comfort, fear, and scarcity rob us of what’s possible unless we consciously choose otherwise.

I bring this to you today because what humans on their deathbed know is that REGRET is the most damaging thing.

So, look at your life today. If you had only moments left to live, is there anything you’d regret?

Did you have true fulfillment in your life?

If the answer would be no, it’s time to do something about it, to make a change.

If that “no” has anything to do with your health and body, I’d love to know more.
Please reply, and let me know what is coming up for you either way!

Wishing you well,
Coach Erinne Guthrie

Don’t Practice Positive Thinking

Don’t Practice Positive Thinking

In his book, Secrets of the Millionaire Mind, T. Harv Eker talks about positive thinking vs. power thinking. He is one of my favorite motivational speakers and authors.

Positive thinking is our default when we want to improve an area of our lives. We journal, recite affirmations, and work to build our positive thoughts. What Eker points out is that positive thinking implies that we accept our own thoughts as truth.

Instead, he suggests focusing on power thinking, which is an extension of positive thinking in that you are working to build your belief, but instead, you acknowledge that things only have meaning because we give them meaning.

You can attach a particular meaning to anything but that doesn’t mean it’s real.

For example, just because you’ve fallen off the wagon in your fitness and nutrition dozens of times doesn’t mean that you’re incapable of success. But that’s the meaning most people give it.

I bring this concept up in the hopes that the next time a situation arises where you feel “less than” or defeated that you stop and ask yourself “what meaning am I giving to this situation?”

By understanding this, you then have the power to change the meaning you assign for the better and propel yourself to new levels of commitment and success.

I’d love to know your thoughts on this!

Wishing you well,
Coach Erinne
